Energy generation is a central topic in our lives and in modern society. The electrical energy we use in our daily lives is generated in power plants using various energy sources such as water (hydroelectric), wind (wind farms), internal heat from the Earth (geothermal), fossil fuels (thermal power plants), and solar energy (solar), among others.
Understanding how these plants work, the various forms of energy generation, their differences and similarities, the socio-environmental impacts they cause, and how electricity is transformed and reaches our homes is crucial to educate citizens who are aware and engaged in energy and environmental issues.
Introduction
This project will address the theme of energy generation, a key concept to understand how the energy we use in our daily lives is generated and distributed. We will explore how an electric power plant works, what are the main forms of energy generation, what is the role of energy in our society and in our daily lives, and what are the socio-environmental impacts of energy generation.
In the first stage, we will learn about the different forms of energy generation, such as renewable sources (like solar, wind, and hydroelectric) and non-renewable sources (like coal, oil, and natural gas thermal power plants). We will explore their benefits and disadvantages, as well as the socio-environmental impacts that each of these forms of energy may have.
In the second stage, we will delve into the issue of electricity consumption and energy efficiency. We will learn about how energy is consumed in our school, our city, and our home, and we will propose collective actions to optimize the use of electrical energy based on the selection of equipment according to sustainability criteria.
Practical Activity
Title: The Energy that Moves the World
Project Objective:
To foster understanding of the various forms of energy generation and the impacts of their use, promoting the practical application of this knowledge to assess and improve energy efficiency in the school or local community.
Detailed Project Description:
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be responsible for studying a form of energy generation (hydroelectric, thermal, wind, solar, or biomass) and giving a presentation to the other students explaining its operation, benefits, disadvantages, and socio-environmental impacts.
After these presentations, the groups should conduct an energy audit at the school or in their homes, identifying the main energy consumers and proposing collective actions to optimize the use of electrical energy, considering sustainability and energy efficiency aspects.
Necessary Materials:
- Internet access for research.
- Presentation materials (can be slides, posters, videos, models, etc., according to each group's choice).
- Materials for conducting the energy audit (pen, paper, digital spreadsheet).
- Electric consumption meter (optional, if available).
Step by Step:
Part 1: Research and presentation on forms of energy generation
- Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
- Each group should research a form of energy generation: hydroelectric, wind, thermal, solar, or biomass.
- The groups should focus on learning about how the assigned form of energy works, its benefits, disadvantages, and socio-environmental impacts.
- Each group should prepare a presentation for the rest of the class about what they have learned. The presentation can be done in various ways, such as slides, posters, videos, models, etc.
Part 2: Energy audit
- After the presentations, each group should conduct an energy audit at the school or in their homes.
- In this audit, students should identify the main energy consumers and evaluate how energy use can be optimized.
- Students should also think about collective actions that could be taken to improve energy efficiency.
Part 3: Report
- Finally, each group should compile their findings and proposals into a report. The report should follow the following structure:
- Introduction: The group should contextualize the theme, its relevance, and the form of energy they studied.
- Development: At this point, the group should explain in detail the operation of the form of energy they studied, discuss the results of the energy audit, and the action proposals they developed.
- Conclusions: Here, the group should synthesize the main points learned during the project and discuss the results obtained.
- Bibliography: The group should list all the sources they used to research and work on the project.
Project Deliverables:
The first deliverable will be a presentation on the form of energy generation that the group studied. The second deliverable will be the report that the group prepared based on the energy audit conducted and the action proposals to improve energy efficiency.
The presentation will allow students to share their knowledge with their peers, which is an excellent way of learning. The report, on the other hand, will allow them to deepen their knowledge on the subject and communicate their ideas and proposals clearly and structured.
