Earth's movements are not only fascinating but also essential for life as we know it. Our existence and survival on the planet directly depend on the complex movements that Earth performs. They are responsible for the changes from day to night, the seasons, different climates, and even tides. Therefore, understanding Earth's movements is crucial to comprehend our place in the universe.

Regarding Earth itself, there are mainly two movements to be considered: rotation and translation. Rotation is the movement Earth makes around its axis, while translation is the movement Earth makes around the Sun. Each of these movements plays a specific and fundamental role in defining the living conditions on the planet.

Introduction

This project aims to deepen your understanding of Earth's movements. Firstly, you will learn details about the two main movements of Earth: rotation and translation. Next, you will explore how Earth's axial tilt affects the seasons. Then, you will relate regional climates to atmospheric and oceanic circulation patterns and the uneven heating caused by Earth's shape and movements. Finally, you will develop three-dimensional models to represent these concepts in a practical and visual way.

Project Objective

Build a three-dimensional model representing Earth's movements and conduct an analysis of how these movements influence regional climate.

Project Description

This project consists of two main components. The first is building a three-dimensional model of Earth's movements. The second is researching and analyzing regional climate patterns and how they are influenced by Earth's movements.

Required Materials

  1. Styrofoam balls of different sizes (representing Earth and the Sun)
  2. Barbecue sticks
  3. Acrylic paint (green, blue, and yellow)
  4. Cardboard
  5. Pencil and ruler
  6. Glue
  7. Computer with internet access for research

Step by Step

  1. Use acrylic paint to color the Styrofoam balls as Earth (blue and green) and the Sun (yellow). Let them dry completely.

  2. Use a barbecue stick to connect Earth and the Sun. Ensure that Earth can freely rotate on its axis.

  3. Tilt Earth on its rotational axis, remembering that this tilt is responsible for the seasons.

  4. Fit the Earth-Sun system on a cardboard that will serve as the base.

  5. Study Earth's rotation and translation movements and represent them with your model, making sure you understand perfectly how they occur and what they represent.

  6. Now, move on to the climate analysis part. Research the climate patterns of your region and identify how Earth's movements influence these patterns. Pay attention to atmospheric and oceanic circulation patterns.

  7. Record all your findings and observations to use later in the written report.

Project Deliverables

  1. Three-Dimensional Model: The model should faithfully represent Earth's movements, considering rotation, translation, and Earth's axial tilt.

This project was designed for groups of 3 to 5 students and should take more than twelve hours to complete.
