Human Body: Puberty

Contextualization

Puberty is a significant and crucial period of transition between childhood and adolescence. During this phase, numerous physical and psychological transformations occur that will prepare the individual for adult life. Puberty is triggered by a complex hormonal system involving the brain and sex glands, resulting in a series of bodily changes such as the growth of hair, the maturation of sexual organs, and menstruation for women.

Among the physical changes, we have rapid growth (known as growth spurt), muscle development, changes in body fat distribution, among others. Psychological changes include a greater interest in identity issues and the expansion of social relationships outside the family nucleus. All these changes are linked and influenced by specific hormones that will be the focus of this project.

Understanding these changes is essential to understand one's own body and to deal with these transformations in a healthy way, as well as being relevant for promoting respect for diversity, since each individual has their own pace of maturation.

Introduction

In this project, we will explore the concepts of puberty, sex hormones, and the nervous system and their respective functions in the typical transformations of this period. Learning will be enhanced by a practical investigation, in which we will investigate the function of some hormones and their role in the various stages of puberty.

This project will also address the interdisciplinary nature between Science and Physical Education. In Physical Education, we will discuss the impacts of hormonal changes on the physical and sports performance of individuals, as well as the importance of physical exercise for health during this period of body transformations.

The importance of this project goes beyond academic learning, as understanding and accepting bodily changes can lead to better self-esteem and self-image, as well as promoting empathy and understanding of the processes that peers are going through.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Understanding Puberty: The Role of Hormones and the Importance of Physical Exercise"

Project Objective

This project aims to deepen students' understanding of the topic of puberty, considering the biological aspects (sex hormones and nervous system) and the importance of physical activity during this period of transformations. The project also aims to develop research, communication, teamwork, and time management skills.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, should develop a "Puberty Guide," a multimedia educational resource that demystifies the puberty process and the transformations that occur in the body during this period. The guide should include information on the hormones that trigger puberty, how they interact with the nervous system, and influence physical and emotional transformations. In addition, students should investigate and include the importance of physical activity during puberty, also addressing its influence on physical and emotional well-being.

The guide can be presented in the form of a digital magazine, an educational video, an interactive infographic, or any other format preferred by the group.

Required Materials

  • Computers with internet access for research;
  • Editing software (can be a video editing tool, graphic design software, presentation programs, etc.);
  • Books and other reference materials.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Completion

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group should choose a format for the "Puberty Guide" (digital magazine, educational video, interactive infographic, etc.).
  3. Students should conduct comprehensive research on the project topics, using the suggested resources and other reliable sources.
  4. Groups should organize the researched information and develop a script for the guide.
  5. Students should produce the "Puberty Guide" using the chosen editing software.
  6. Each group should present their guide to the class, explaining the content and the creation process.
  7. Finally, students should write a report on the project, including sections on introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography.

Project Deliverables

The final project delivery is twofold: the "Puberty Guide" and the project report.

The "Puberty Guide" serves as a visual and interactive delivery that demonstrates the knowledge acquired by students about puberty, the role of sex hormones, the interaction with the nervous system, and the importance of physical activity during this period.

The project report should detail the creation process of the guide, starting with the introduction of the topic and its importance, followed by a summary of the researched theoretical information. The development section should explain the methodology used for the guide creation, the decisions made during the process, and the difficulties encountered. The results obtained and lessons learned should be discussed in the conclusion section. Finally, the bibliography should list all sources used during the research.
