Context

Weather forecasting is a crucial part of our daily lives. It guides our outdoor activities, agriculture depends on it to optimize production, and even emergency services use weather predictions to prepare for natural disasters. But have you ever wondered how these forecasts are made?

Meteorology, the science that studies the phenomena that occur in the Earth's atmosphere, is a fascinating and complex field that uses principles of physics and mathematics to predict the weather. Meteorologists use a variety of tools and technologies, including satellites, radar, supercomputers, and weather monitoring stations, to collect and analyze data about the atmosphere and create models that predict weather patterns.

Introduction

To get started, it is important to understand some basic concepts. The Earth's atmosphere is a layer of gases and particles that surrounds the Earth, and weather conditions are determined by the interaction between these components. Factors such as temperature, pressure, humidity, and wind speed are key parts of this equation.

The field becomes even more complex when you consider the influence of the ocean on the atmosphere, the water cycle, cloud cover, and other environmental variables. To accurately predict the weather, we need to take all of these factors into account on a global scale and understand how they interrelate.

Hands-on Activity: "Weather in Our Hands"

Objectives

  1. To understand the main variables involved in weather forecasting.
  2. To build a DIY weather forecasting kit.

Project Description

Students should work in groups of 3 to 5. The project will take approximately 4 weeks to complete (12+ student hours). They will build instruments to create their own weather forecasting kit. Subsequently, they will monitor and catalog the weather in their local areas over a specific period of time and attempt to make predictions based on the data collected.

Necessary Materials

  1. Plastic bottles
  2. Rubber balloon
  3. Wooden stick
  4. String
  5. Scissors
  6. Ruler
  7. Glue
  8. Paper for notes

Remember that it is important to carry out the activities with the help of an adult and always remember to take care of everyone's safety when handling the materials!

Step by Step Guide

Part 1: Preparing the Kit

Students will build the following instruments:

  1. Barometer: Use the plastic bottle, balloon, string, and wooden stick to create a simple barometer, which can be used to measure atmospheric pressure. I suggest the article "How to Make a Simple Weather Barometer" from the wikiHow website for detailed instructions.

  2. Rain gauge: Use another plastic bottle to create a rain gauge, which can be used to measure the amount of rain that falls over a given period. To learn how to create one, I suggest the video "How to Make a Homemade Rain Gauge" on YouTube.

  3. Anemometer: It is an instrument that measures wind speed. This can also be built using easy-to-find recyclable materials.

Part 2: Collecting Data

Once they have their instruments ready, students should begin collecting data. Students should monitor and record measurements from their weather forecasting kit daily for a period of 4 weeks.

Part 3: Making Predictions

Using the data collected, students will attempt to make their own weather predictions. By comparing their predictions with official weather forecasts (available on websites such as INMET), they will be able to see how accurate their predictions are.

Deliverables

At the end of the project, students must submit a final report, structured as follows:

  1. Introduction: Students should contextualize weather forecasting and its importance in the modern world, and why they decided to embark on this project.
  2. Development: Students should detail the construction of the weather forecasting kit, the difficulties encountered, the variables they had to monitor, how they felt about having to make their own weather predictions based on the data collected, etc.
  3. Conclusion: The student should report on the lessons learned, the effectiveness of their instruments, the accuracy of their predictions, and what they would do differently or improve in a future project.
  4. Bibliography: Students should list all sources of information they used for research and project completion.
