Theoretical Introduction to the Theme

Understanding a text is a fundamental skill that goes beyond the classroom, being an essential competence for a successful and productive life in contemporary society. Reading is a constructive, interactive, and subjective process. Each reader brings their experiences, knowledge, and beliefs to the text, and these aspects shape their understanding.

In the field of Psycholinguistics, the constructive-interactive model argues that reading is not a passive process. On the contrary, it is interactive because it involves the reader and the text. Furthermore, it is a constructive process because the reader constructs the meaning of the text based on their linguistic knowledge and prior world knowledge.

The last of the pillars is the subjective aspect of reading. This is where emotions, feelings, and personal experiences of readers come into play. They bring their beliefs and attitudes to the reading, which can strongly influence their interpretation of the text. The implications of this are enormous, as it means that different readers can interpret the same text in very different ways.

Theme Contextualization

Reading and understanding texts are crucial skills in all school subjects and in everyday life. For example, in science, it is necessary to be able to read and understand scientific articles. In mathematics, problems are often presented as texts, and it is necessary to precisely understand what is being asked. In the professional world, the ability to read and understand emails, reports, and other documents is fundamental.

Furthermore, reading is also an important form of entertainment and leisure. Books, magazines, comics, newspapers, and web pages offer endless reading options. Last but not least, reading is also a powerful way to learn about different cultures, people, and places. It is a window to the world, allowing us to experience things that we could never live firsthand.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Between the Lines: A Journey through Literary Diversity"

Project Objective

Develop reading and comprehension skills in Portuguese through the exploration of different literary genres and forms of writing. Additionally, stimulate collaboration and critical interpretation of literature.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be responsible for reading and analyzing different works of distinct literary genres. After reading, they must create a multimedia presentation detailing and discussing the book read, the main literary techniques employed, the historical-cultural context, and its relevance.

They will also need to prepare a written report based on the presentation, which must follow the specified format (Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography).

Necessary Materials

• Different literary works of various genres
• Computer with internet access (for research and creation of the multimedia presentation)
• Presentation creation program (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.)

Step by Step

1. Book Selection: The teacher will provide a list of different literary genres and respective works. Each group will choose one work from each literary genre.

2. Reading and Analysis: Students must read and analyze the work, highlighting important elements such as: theme, writing style, characters, plot, historical and cultural context, literary relevance, etc.

3. Additional Research: Each group will conduct more detailed research on the author, the historical context of the work, the critical reception of the book, etc.

4. Presentation Creation: Based on the reading, analysis, and research, students will create a multimedia presentation about the book. The presentation should provide information about the work, its author, historical and cultural contexts, literary analysis, among other relevant aspects.

5. Report Elaboration: In parallel with the presentation, students must write a detailed report following the model:

   • Introduction: Describe the work, the literary genre, and the reason for the choice.
   • Development: Report the procedures used, the analysis of the work, the additional research, and the findings.
   • Conclusions: Recap the main points of the analysis, reflect on the reading experience and the learnings.
   • Bibliography: List the consulted sources.

6. Project Presentation: Each group will present their project to the class, following the order of the multimedia presentation and the report.

Project Deliverables

The students' work will be evaluated both by the multimedia presentation and the written report. The presentation must be clear and include all necessary information for understanding the work. The report, in turn, should complement the presentation, deepening the analysis of the work and reflecting on the reading and comprehension process.

The objective of this activity is for students to become capable of approaching any text - be it a literary work, a scientific article, a business report, or a simple email - with the same attention and analytical skills.
