Compound Period by Subordination

Contextualization

The proper use of the Portuguese language is essential for our daily communication. Part of this involves understanding the structure of our sentences and how they connect to form what we call a sentence. The sentence can be simple, compound by coordination, or compound by subordination. In this project, we will focus on understanding the compound sentence by subordination.

The compound sentence by subordination is a linguistic structure in which one or more clauses syntactically depend on another clause, called the main clause. Subordinate clauses can perform different syntactic functions within the sentence (such as subject, direct object, nominal complement, etc.), which expands the possibilities of expression in writing and speech.

A deep understanding of the compound sentence by subordination not only allows us to better interpret and produce complex texts, but also increases our linguistic competence, giving us more tools to express ourselves precisely and effectively. This concept is found in various contexts, from literature to academic and professional texts, and its understanding is essential for an effective use of the Portuguese language.

The Portuguese language, like any language, is constantly evolving and changing. In this sense, the study of the compound sentence by subordination can help us understand the nuances and complexities of Portuguese, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and richness of this language that we use every day.

To delve deeper into this topic, we suggest the following resources:

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Composing Subordinations - A dive into the universe of compound sentences."

Project Objective:

This project aims to understand and practice the concept of compound sentence by subordination in the Portuguese language. For this, students should identify, analyze, and create text excerpts with different types of subordinate clauses, exposing their understanding of the practical use of this concept.

Project Description:

Divided into groups of 3 to 5 students, you will embark on a journey through the universe of compound sentences by subordination. The work should be divided among the group members, where each will have a specific role: researcher, writer, reviewer, and presenter (in groups of five, there may be two writers). Each group will choose a specific type of text (narrative, descriptive, or argumentative) and, from it, should, using the compound sentence by subordination, create a text with a minimum of 500 words.

Necessary Materials:

  • Notebook or computer with internet access for research;
  • Portuguese dictionary;
  • Notebook for notes;
  • Colored pens.

Step by Step:

  1. Group Organization: Form groups of 3 to 5 students and choose the roles of each member in the group.

  2. Choosing the Type of Text: Decide on which type of text (narrative, descriptive, or argumentative) your group will work on.

  3. Research and Study: Conduct an in-depth research on the concept of compound sentence by subordination and the different types of subordinate clauses. Ensure that all members understand the concept.

  4. Text Creation: Write the text using the studied concept, ensuring that different types of subordinate clauses are present.

  5. Text Review: Review the produced text, checking the correct use of subordinate clauses and content coherence.

  6. Presentation Preparation: Prepare a brief presentation (10 minutes) explaining the concept of compound sentence by subordination, how the text creation process was, and examples of the use of subordinate clauses within the text.

  7. Delivery and Presentation: Submit the written text and make the presentation to the class.

Project Deliverables:

  • Created Text: Submit the finalized text, highlighting the subordinate clauses used.

  • Presentation: Make a presentation (10 minutes) to the class explaining the concept, the text creation process, and examples of the use of subordinate clauses in the created text.

  • Final Report: Write a report following the Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography sections indicated in the project.

In the introduction, you should present the concept of compound sentence by subordination, its relevance, and the project's purpose. In the development, explain the theory behind the concept, the text creation process, the methodology used, and present the created text, highlighting and discussing the different types of subordinate clauses used. In the conclusions section, reflect on what you have learned and your conclusions about the project. Finally, provide a bibliography with all the sources used.

This project is a great opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of an important element of the Portuguese language, develop research, writing, review, presentation, and teamwork skills.
