Textual Genre: Advertising Text

Context

Advertising is part of our daily lives, whether on television, radio, magazines and newspapers, social media, or any other type of media. It has the power to influence our choices, behaviors, and even our thoughts, so understanding the techniques and strategies used by advertising becomes essential.

Advertising texts are characterized by being persuasive and creative. They go beyond simple information and have elements that appeal to consumers' emotions, values, and desires. These texts can appear in the form of ads, commercials, banners, flyers, among others.

Introduction

The objective of this study is to provide students with an understanding of the constitutive elements of advertising texts, as well as the persuasion techniques and strategies used by them. In addition, we will develop skills in producing and analyzing these texts, aiming at the formation of more critical and conscious individuals.

The importance of studying advertising texts lies in the fact that we experience a daily bombardment of information and advertising appeals. Knowing the techniques used by these texts is a way to become more critical and conscious of the influences we are subjected to.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Creation of an Advertising Campaign"

Project Objective:

Create a complete advertising campaign for a fictional product, using the techniques and strategies learned about advertising text. Students should analyze real examples of advertising campaigns, identify the techniques used, and then apply this knowledge to create their own campaign. The work will be done in groups of 3 to 5 students.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will create an advertising campaign for a fictional product. The campaign must include at least one newspaper/magazine ad, an internet ad, a radio spot, and a TV commercial.

Groups should choose a theme that is significant to the school and/or school community, define the target audience, and then decide on the best persuasion and convincing strategies to use.

The advertising campaign should be presented to the class in an interactive exhibition, where students must explain the choices and strategies they used.

Students should also prepare a written report on the project, in which they will discuss the importance of advertising texts, the theory behind their choices, the campaign creation process, and the conclusions they reached.

Required Materials:

  1. Paper, pencil, and eraser
  2. Computer with internet access
  3. Editing programs (optional)
  4. Camera for recording the commercial (can be a smartphone)
  5. Research resources – books, magazines, websites, etc.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Group Formation and Product Definition: Form groups of 3 to 5 students. Together, they should create a fictional product for the advertising campaign.

  2. Research and Analysis: Groups should research and analyze examples of advertising texts and identify the persuasion techniques used. They should also define the target audience for their product.

  3. Campaign Creation: Groups will produce the advertising pieces for the campaign. This should include a print ad, an internet ad, a radio spot, and a TV commercial.

  4. Campaign Exhibition: Each group must present their campaign to the class. This presentation should include an explanation of the choices and strategies the group used.

  5. Report Elaboration: Each group will produce a written report on the project. In the report, students should discuss the importance of advertising texts, the theory behind their choices, the campaign creation process, and the conclusions they reached.

Project Deliverables:

Each group must deliver:

  1. Advertising Campaign: Printed and digital advertising pieces, and audio and video recordings of the radio spots and TV commercials.

  2. Written Report: Document explaining the project, with the following topics:

    • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, relevance of advertising text, project objective.
    • Development: Theory on advertising text and persuasion techniques, detailed explanation of the activity performed, methodology used, presentation and discussion of the results obtained.
    • Conclusions: Return to the main points, lessons learned, conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: Sources used for the project.
