Coordinating and Subordinating Conjunctions

Contextualization

The Portuguese language is a vast and complex universe, with diverse rules and structures that allow us to express an infinity of ideas and feelings. One of the most fundamental elements of this structure is the use of conjunctions. They are invariable words that connect sentences, phrases, or words of the same syntactical function, providing the formation of more complex and significant sentences. The study of conjunctions is divided into two main parts: coordinating and subordinating.

Coordinating conjunctions connect two sentences or terms of the same grammatical function without one sentence depending on the other. They are grouped into five types: additive, adversative, alternative, conclusive, and explicative. On the other hand, subordinating conjunctions connect a main sentence to a subordinate sentence, so that the existence and meaning of the latter depend directly on the former. They are classified into: causal, comparative, concessive, conditional, conforming, final, proportional, temporal, integral, and consecutive.

The mastery of these concepts is fundamental for the fluency and clarity of written and oral communication, whether in academic papers, reports, entrance exams, or even in our daily conversations. Moreover, the knowledge of conjunctions aids in the interpretation of texts, facilitating the understanding of literary, journalistic, and academic texts, in addition to allowing for a more consistent and cohesive argumentation.

In our globalized world, the ability to express oneself in a clear and coherent way is an important differential. Whether in a work meeting, in an entrance exam or when writing a text on the internet, mastering the use of conjunctions can help make our ideas more comprehensible and appealing to others. In addition, by working in groups to understand and apply these concepts, students can develop valuable skills, such as collaboration, communication, and critical thinking, which are essential in the 21st century.

To further your studies, I suggest as reading material the book "Portuguese Grammar" by Pasquale and Ulisses, and also a visit to the website "Portuguese on the net" which offers a vast amount of didactic material on the subject. In addition, the website "Norma Culta" can provide an even greater theoretical depth, with exercises to practice the content learned.

Practical Activity: Demystifying Conjunctions through Theatrics

Project Objective

The purpose of this project is to provide students with a dynamic and practical way to learn about coordinating and subordinating conjunctions, recognizing them in varied contexts and understanding their use and importance in constructing sentences and texts. At the same time, this project is expected to stimulate students' collaboration, communication, and creativity, as they will be working in groups.

Project Description

In this project, students will develop and perform a play, where each character represents a coordinating or subordinating conjunction. To do this, they will have to study the concepts of conjunctions, identify the differences between the two types and exemplify their use in sentences. The play will be followed by the production of a project report.

Necessary Materials

  • Books and/or online reference materials on Portuguese grammar.
  • Material for developing the script of the play (paper, pens, computer, etc.).
  • Miscellaneous materials for the play's setting and costumes (as per the creativity of the group).

Step-by-Step Activity

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group should study the coordinating and subordinating conjunctions and divide the number of conjunctions among the members.
  3. Students should create characters representing each of the conjunctions assigned to them, developing a personality and history for each one based on their meanings and uses.
  4. Write a script for a play where these characters interact with each other. The interaction should demonstrate the use and function of conjunctions in the structure of sentences and texts.
  5. Rehearse and present the play to the class. Each presentation should last 15 to 20 minutes.
  6. After the presentation, each group must write a report on the project.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

  1. The original script of the play, highlighting the characters and the conjunctions they represent, as well as the use of these conjunctions in the play.
  2. A project report, which should contain:
    • Introduction: Description of the project theme, relevance of learning about conjunctions and why they chose the idea of the play to study the subject.
    • Development: Discussion on coordinating and subordinating conjunctions, highlighting their characteristics and differences. Detailed description of the preparation and presentation process of the play, including the difficulties faced and how they were overcome. Discussion on the results of the project, what they learned and how it improved (or not) their understanding of conjunctions.
    • Conclusion: Reflection on the experience of the project, what they learned about conjunctions and how this can be applied in other writing and reading contexts.
    • Bibliography: List of resources they used to study the conjunctions and prepare the play.

Remember, the main objective of this project is to learn about conjunctions and improve your writing and reading skills, but also to collaborate and communicate effectively with colleagues.
