Verb: Concept of Verb

Contextualization

Verb is one of the most important grammatical classes in the Portuguese Language. It is the core of the predicate, expressing actions, states, and phenomena carried out by the subjects of the sentences. In a simplified way, we can say that verbs constitute the 'action' of the sentence, whether it is real or subjective. In many cases, the relationship between subject and verb is the foundation of communication.

Verbs have their own characteristics and can be classified in different ways. Taking into account the tense, mood, and voice in which they are used, we can identify different pieces of information that the verb provides in a sentence. For example, a verb can indicate an action performed in the past, present, or future; it can express certainty, doubt, or an order; it can indicate whether the subject performs or undergoes the action, among many other possibilities.

In this project, our goal is to explore the concept of verb, its characteristics, its functions within the sentence, and how they can contribute to the understanding of texts. Through practical and playful activities, we aim to deepen your knowledge about this grammatical class, which is so present and fundamental in our daily communication.

In our daily lives, we are constantly involved in communication situations. Whether in a face-to-face conversation, reading a book, or in a text message, language is always present. Knowing how to identify and use verbs correctly can enrich our expression and facilitate our understanding of the discourses that circulate in our society.

For example, when reading a news article, it is through verbs that we can identify the actions taken, who took them, and when they occurred. When writing a text, the proper use of verbs allows us to communicate our ideas more precisely and interestingly. Therefore, knowing and understanding verbs is essential for our role as communicative and critical citizens.

As resources for studying the topic, we suggest consulting the book 'Gramática da Língua Portuguesa' by Celso Cunha, and 'Manual de Semântica' by Margarida Basílio. Both offer clear and detailed explanations about verbs. Additionally, we recommend using the Portuguese Language reference website, 'Portal da Língua Portuguesa' (http://www.portaldalinguaportuguesa.org/), which provides didactic material, exercises, and videos on the subject.

Practical Activity

Title: 'Exploring the Universe of Verbs'

Project Objective

This project aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore and understand the concept and characteristics of verbs in a playful and collaborative way.

Detailed Project Description

Students will create a board game that will incorporate concepts and characteristics of verbs. The idea is that students, besides creating the game, also play and test their knowledge about verbs throughout the game.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard sheet
  • Colored markers
  • Dice
  • Small objects to be used as game pieces
  • Sticky notes
  • Computer with internet access for research

Step by Step

  1. Organize students into groups of 3 to 5.
  2. The groups will have one week to build the game.
  3. Propose that each group creates a path on the board to be traveled by the game pieces. The spaces should contain questions or challenges related to verbs (regular and irregular verbs, transitive and intransitive verbs, auxiliary verbs, among others).
  4. Suggest that the challenges vary in nature: Some may be direct questions, others may require players to form sentences with a specific verb, among others.
  5. After creating the game, each group must explain the rules and the objective of the game to the class.
  6. The groups will exchange the games created and play the neighboring group's game.

Project Deliverables

  • Board game: After creating the board game, each group will present their game to the class, explaining the rules and how verbal concepts are incorporated into the game.

  • Written document: Each group must submit a written report, following the following topics:

    1. Introduction

Here, students should contextualize the theme of 'Verb Concept,' its relevance in the real world, and the objective of this project.

    2. Development

In this topic, they should describe in detail the process of creating the game, the rules, how verbal concepts were incorporated, and the methodology used to create the game. Students should highlight the challenges encountered during the activity, the solutions found, and the discussions that emerged from the project.

    3. Conclusions

In this section, students should emphasize the most important points of the project, the knowledge acquired, and how the project impacted the understanding of verbs.

    4. Bibliography

Students should reference all sources used during the project. This may include books, websites, videos, among others.

This practical activity aims not only to assess students' learning about the 'Verb Concept,' but also collaboration skills, time management, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
