Figures of speech are strategies that speakers of a language use to express something in a non-literal, more impressive, creative, or emphatic way.

Figures of speech are an extremely relevant stylistic resource. They allow breaking the monotony of literal language, provide linguistic richness and variety, express emotions and feelings more intensely, and emphasize an idea or argument. Moreover, they often allow the speaker to express something that would be difficult to express directly.

Figures of speech are not restricted to literature. We use them in our daily conversations, in writing texts, in advertising, in journalism, in music, and in almost all forms of verbal expression. Metaphor, for example, is a figure of speech that compares two distinct things, bringing new meanings to the message. "Your eyes are two stars" is a metaphor that expresses someone's beauty.

Irony, another figure of speech, is a way of expressing the opposite of what is said directly or literally, often with a critical or humorous intention. The use of irony can make texts much richer in meaning and more interesting for the audience.

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students to understand and identify the main existing figures of speech and also apply them in the construction of creative and interesting texts.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, students will be challenged to create a "Figures of Speech Magazine." The magazine should contain different sections, each dedicated to a specific figure of speech (metaphor, irony, hyperbole, etc.). The project will foster teamwork, encourage research, stimulate creativity, and provide a greater understanding and knowledge of figures of speech.

Necessary Materials

• Computer or tablet with internet access for research;
• Text and image editing programs;
• Materials for magazine layout (can be done online or physically).

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

1. Forming groups: Students must organize themselves into groups of 3 to 5 people.
2. Theoretical research: Each group must study in detail about figures of speech.
3. Section definition: After the research, the group will decide which figures of speech they want to present in the magazine. Each student will be responsible for a specific section.
4. Creation of text and images: The content of each section should explain what the figure of speech is and exemplify it. It is interesting to present examples in literary texts, music, advertisements, etc. In addition, students can create their own texts applying the studied figure of speech.
5. Magazine layout: After defining the content, students will layout the magazine, either physically or virtually.
6. Presentation: Finally, each group will present the magazine to the class, explain the choice of figures of speech, and share the learning during the process.
