Imperative Mode: Standard and Colloquial Varieties

Context

The imperative mood is a crucial part of verb conjugation in Portuguese, used to express orders, requests, advice, instructions, among other situations. It is divided into two forms: standard (or formal) and colloquial (or informal).

The standard form is found in traditional grammars and is used in more formal contexts, such as speeches, scientific texts, and normative texts. The colloquial form, on the other hand, prevails in everyday conversations and in more informal texts.

Both forms are equally correct and appropriate, each in its context. The use of one form or the other depends on the degree of formality and the relationship between the interlocutors.

Understanding the imperative mood and its forms is essential for communicative competence in Portuguese. Furthermore, it allows for a deeper and more critical analysis of discourses, identifying the level of formality and the speaker's intention.

I suggest using the following resources for research on the topic:

  • Book: 'Gramática da Língua Portuguesa' by Maria Helena de Moura Neves. Available in the school library, this book is a reference in the study of Portuguese grammar.

  • Website: 'Ciberdúvidas da Língua Portuguesa' (https://ciberduvidas.iscte-iul.pt/). This website has a vast amount of information about the Portuguese language, including the imperative mood.

  • Website: 'Portal da Língua Portuguesa' (http://www.portaldalinguaportuguesa.org/). This portal also presents discussions and examples of the use of the imperative mood in Portuguese.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Imperatives in Action'

Project Objective:

The project aims to deepen the understanding of the use of the imperative mood in standard and colloquial forms, through the creation of a theatrical piece that must be written and performed by the students.

Detailed Project Description:

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, should research, script, and perform a theatrical piece that brings dialogues and situations that explore the use of the imperative mood in standard and colloquial forms.

Each group should produce a script for a theatrical piece that includes the use of both forms of the imperative mood. Then, the students should rehearse and perform the piece, recording the presentation on video.

The piece should have a minimum duration of 15 minutes and a maximum of 25 minutes.

Evaluation will be based on the demonstrated understanding of the use of the imperative mood, the creativity shown, and the quality of teamwork.

Required Materials:

  • Internet access for research.
  • Materials for scripting: sheets of paper, pencils, and erasers.
  • Camera for recording the theatrical piece (can be a student's cell phone).
  • Space for rehearsals and recordings.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Research on the Imperative Mood: Students should use the indicated resources to deepen their understanding of the topic. They should take notes on examples and characteristics of the two forms of the imperative mood.

  2. Script Creation: Based on what they have learned, students should create a script for a theatrical piece that includes situations where it is necessary to use the imperative mood in standard and colloquial forms.

  3. Rehearsal and Recording: Students will rehearse the piece according to the created script and then make the recording.

  4. Writing the Report: Once the recordings are completed, students should prepare a report detailing the project.

Project Deliverables:

Upon completion of the project, student groups must deliver:

  1. The script of the theatrical piece.
  2. The video of the piece presentation.
  3. A written report.

Connection between the suggested activities and the project deliverables:

The written report should follow the following structure:

  • Introduction: Contextualize the theme, explain the relevance of the imperative mood in standard and colloquial forms in the real world, and the project's objective.
  • Development: Detail the theory on the imperative mood, explain the process of creating the script, preparation, and presentation of the piece, the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained.
  • Conclusion: Recap the main points, explain the learnings obtained, and conclude on the work done.
  • Bibliography: Indicate the research sources.

These documents will be the basis for evaluating the project, along with the video of the presentation.
