Contextualization

When studying the Portuguese language, we come across a wide variety of structures and formats that allow us to communicate our thoughts, feelings and ideas in a clear and coherent way. One such structure is the sentence, which plays a fundamental role in the arrangement of our sentences and the way we share information. In particular, the distinction between a simple sentence and a compound sentence proves crucial in expressing our ideas.

A simple sentence contains a single clause, that is, it has a single main verb. While the compound period contains two or more clauses, each with its own main verb. These clauses can be coordinated or subordinated, thus creating a variety of ways to express different aspects of the same idea. It's important to note that the use of simple or compound sentences can significantly affect the meaning and tone of our sentences, thus giving our language great flexibility and expressiveness.

Imagine, for example, the difference between saying "I went to the market and bought fruit" and "After going to the market, I bought fruit". In the first case, we use a compound sentence by coordination to express two distinct but related actions. In the second case, a period consisting of subordination is used to indicate a cause-and-effect relationship between the two actions.

In this project, you will have the opportunity to explore and thoroughly understand these concepts, applying them in the construction of your own sentences and texts. In addition, by working in groups, you will be able to collaborate and exchange ideas, thus developing your communication and teamwork skills.

As a resource for study and further study, we recommend the book “Grammar of the Portuguese Language”, by Maria Helena Mira Mateus, Ana Maria Brito, Inês Duarte and Isabel Hub Faria, available in the school library. In addition, the website "Enlightened Portuguese" (https://www.portugues.esclarecido.com.br/) offers a variety of explanations and exercises on Portuguese grammar, including the topic of simple and compound sentences.

Practical Activity

Activity title: "Newspaper Team: Exploring Simple and Compound Sentences"

Project objective

The objective of this project is to enable students to explore and apply the concepts of simple and compound sentences in a real and practical context. The focus is on enabling students to consciously identify, differentiate and apply these structures in their textual productions. In addition, it aims to develop socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, communication, time management and problem solving.

Detailed description of the project

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members and each group will be responsible for producing a Newspaper. Each Newspaper should contain a variety of sections (opinion pieces, reports, interviews, etc.) in which the concepts of simple and compound sentences should be applied consciously and with justification.

To aid in the execution of the work, each group should divide the sections and tasks among its members, ensuring that all members have the opportunity to work with the concepts studied.

Necessary materials

• Reference books and materials for research
• Paper and pencil or computer with word processor

Step-by-step guide to carrying out the activity

1. Form groups and define the responsibilities of each member in the Newspaper.
2. Research and study the concept of simple and compound sentences with your groups, using the suggested resources and other sources you deem relevant.
3. Choose the themes and sections that will be part of the Newspaper (suggested sections: local news, editorials, opinion pieces, reports, interviews, short stories, book/movie reviews, etc.).
4. Each member should produce an initial outline of their text, applying the concepts of simple and compound sentences.
5. Make group revisions of the outlines, making sure that simple and compound sentences are being used correctly and that the texts are coherent and well-written.
6. After the revision, finalize the texts and assemble the Newspaper.
7. Each group should produce a detailed written report, as guided in the project delivery section.

Project deliverables

Each group must submit two final products:

1. The Newspaper: Composed of the texts produced, illustrations, etc. Each text must be accompanied by a brief explanation of how and why the concepts of simple and compound sentences were applied.

2. The Report: Must be organized according to the topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions and Bibliography, and address:

   • Introduction: Contextualization of the project theme, its relevance and application in the real world, and the project objective.
   • Development: Explanation of the theory of simple and compound sentences, the procedures adopted by the group and the description of the activities carried out. It should also contain a discussion of the results obtained.
   • Conclusion: Recapitulation of the main points of the work, lessons learned and conclusions drawn about the project.
   • Bibliography: Indication of the research sources used to prepare the project.

Remember that the work is done in groups. Therefore, the division of tasks, collaboration and communication among group members are fundamental to the success of the project.
