Verb: Voices of the Verb

Context

The study of the 'Voices of the verb' is a fundamental aspect of Portuguese grammar. They are categorizations that help us understand how the subject relates to the action expressed by the verb. There are three: the active voice, in which the subject is the one who performs the action; the passive voice, in which the subject is the one to whom the action is performed; and the reflexive voice, where the subject both performs and undergoes the action simultaneously.

For a full understanding of these concepts, it is essential to practice the correct use of verbal voices and understand their implications in the context of a sentence. Although most of us use them intuitively in our daily conversations, having a theoretical understanding of these structures can improve our writing ability and text interpretation.

In our increasingly connected world, the ability to communicate effectively is a powerful tool. And knowing how to manipulate verbal voices can be a way to make our communication more precise and expressive.

Theme Importance

The voices of the verb are a powerful tool in our language. Knowing how and when to use each of them can completely change the meaning of a sentence, allowing us to express nuances of meaning and different perspectives.

For example, saying 'The dog bit the boy' (active voice) has a different impact than 'The boy was bitten by the dog' (passive voice). Both sentences express the same action, but each emphasizes a different aspect of the situation. Knowing how to manipulate these structures can be very useful in situations such as discussions, debates, written compositions, and even in reading news and various texts.

Practical Activity - 'On Stage: The Voices of the Verb'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to familiarize students with the three verbal voices: the active voice, the passive voice, and the reflexive voice. Students will practice identifying these voices in various types of texts and also transforming one voice into another. To make learning more engaging and fun, students will turn their discoveries into a theatrical piece.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will receive different texts that can be taken from books, news, scientific articles, blogs, among others. The groups' task will be to identify the voices of the verb present in these texts and create a theatrical script based on these texts, highlighting the use of the voices of the verb.

Required Materials

  • Texts selected by the teacher
  • Paper and pen for notes
  • Computer with internet access for research

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Divide students into groups of 3 to 5 people.
  2. Distribute different texts to each group.
  3. Each group must first read the received texts and identify the voices of the verb contained in these texts.
  4. After identification, the groups should discuss and develop a theatrical script that explains the concepts of the voices of the verb in a playful way based on the texts they received. The script should contain situations where each voice of the verb is used and also transformations from one voice to another.
  5. The groups present the results of their research and rehearsals to the class, exposing their findings and performing the created piece.
  6. Finally, the groups should prepare a report on the work done.

Project Deliverables

Practical:

Groups must deliver the script of the theatrical piece created and present the piece to the class. The theatrical piece should be able to exemplify the use of the voices of the verb in various contexts, showing the relevance and application of these concepts in practice.

Theoretical:

The report to be delivered should contain:

  1. Introduction: Contextualize the theme, explain why it is important to understand the voices of the verb, and what the project's objective was.
  2. Development: Explain the theory of the voices of the verb and describe the activity developed. Present the texts used and discuss the results obtained in identifying the voices of the verbs and in transforming one voice into another. Describe how the scripts and the theatrical piece were created.
  3. Conclusions: Summarize the main points of the work, indicate the learnings acquired, and the conclusions drawn from the project.
  4. Bibliography: Indicate the sources used to work on the project, such as the base texts, research websites, textbooks, among others.

The proposed activity aims to develop both technical skills in identifying and manipulating the voices of the verb, as well as socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, communication, time management, among others.
