Denotation and Connotation

Contextualization

In our daily lives, we are constantly in contact with different forms of communication. Whether in an informal conversation, reading a book, a blog article, or a news article, there is an exchange of information in which words are our main tools. Thus, it is essential to understand that words can have more than one meaning, depending on the context in which they are inserted. This is where two important concepts come in: denotation and connotation.

Denotation refers to the real, literal meaning of a word, which is the one found in dictionaries. For example, when we say that "the rose is red", we are using the denotation of the word "rose", referring to the flower. Connotation is the figurative, subjective meaning that a word can have. This depends a lot on the cultural, emotional, and personal context. For example, the word "rose" connotes beauty, love, and delicacy.

Understanding these concepts is fundamental not only for learning the Portuguese language but also for interpreting texts, for textual production, and for communication in general. Given that connotation can vary according to culture, social environment, and context, the ability to understand the various meanings of a word is a valuable skill for the 21st century, where cultural diversity and global communication are so present.

The wide availability of information, especially with the advancement of technology, makes it increasingly crucial to have the skills to interpret and analyze the messages we receive. In this way, working with denotation and connotation allows us to develop a critical sense about the information we consume, whether it comes from news, social networks, movies, music, literary works, among others.

Therefore, students are encouraged to explore various resources to deepen their knowledge and understanding of denotation and connotation. They can use the book "Communication in Portuguese" (Editora Moderna), the website Brasil Escola, and also the YouTube channel Português em Foco.

Practical Activity

Title of the Activity: "Painting with Words: A Study on Denotation and Connotation"

Project Objective:

Understand the concepts of denotation and connotation in practice, apply them in the analysis of news texts, and produce their own content using these concepts strategically.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group must select and analyze 3 different editorials from newspapers or news websites. The objective is to identify and compare the various news items, the types of facts that are reported and commented on, the choices about what to report and what not to report, the prominence/focus given, and the reliability of the information.

Based on this analysis, the practical work will consist of producing a short editorial (500 to 800 words) on a current topic. The production of the text must involve the conscious and strategic use of words in their denotative and connotative senses. Students must be able to justify the choices made, based on their knowledge of the literal and figurative meanings of the words used.

Materials Needed:

  1. Computer with internet access for research;
  2. Newspaper articles from different editorial sections;
  3. Didactic materials for theoretical study: books, videos, educational websites.

Detailed Step by Step to Carry Out the Activity:

  1. Formation of groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Study of the concept of denotation and connotation using the resources provided.
  3. Selection of three editorials from newspapers or news websites for analysis.
  4. Reading and group discussion about the chosen news items, identifying the use of denotation and connotation, types of facts reported, the prominence/focus given, and the reliability of the information.
  5. Choice of a current topic for the production of the editorial.
  6. Elaboration of the text, using words in their denotative and connotative senses strategically.
  7. Revision of the text produced by the group.
  8. Writing of the final report, detailing the entire process, from the theoretical study of the concepts, the analysis of the journalistic texts, and the elaboration of the text itself.

Project Deliverables:

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

  1. The editorial created by the group.

  2. A written report containing:

    • Introduction: Should contextualize the topic, its relevance, the application in real life, and the project's objective.
    • Development: Should detail the theory behind the project's central themes, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: Should summarize the main points, explain the learning obtained, and the conclusions drawn about the project.
    • Bibliography: Should indicate the sources researched to carry out the project.

These deliverables serve as a means for students to consolidate their learning, also allowing them to demonstrate their writing, analysis, teamwork, and time management skills. In addition, the writing of the report provides a detailed record of the group's learning process, becoming a valuable resource for assessment and feedback.
