Punctuation is an essential part of our writing system and has a primary function: to structure the text and enable adequate reading, bringing fluency and clarity to the message that you want to convey. Through punctuation marks, it is possible to organize ideas and arguments, express feelings, effects of meaning, rhythm, and even the intonation that occurs during a conversation. Without punctuation, the text becomes difficult to understand, and the same sentence can have several interpretations.

The punctuation marks that we use (full stop, comma, semicolon, colon, question mark, exclamation point, ellipsis, parentheses, brackets, quotation marks, hyphen, dash) are not mere adornments of a text: each one of them has a specific function and their incorrect use can completely change the meaning of what you want to communicate.

Punctuation is governed by grammar rules, but it is also a stylistic resource that contributes to the beauty and richness of a text. It is not enough to use it correctly; you need to know how to use it effectively.

Importance of the Theme

In an increasingly globalized world, in which written communication is a frequently used resource, knowing how to punctuate correctly is an indispensable skill. In a professional environment, a well-written and well-punctuated text is synonymous with clarity and objectivity in communication, aspects valued in any area of activity. Furthermore, understanding punctuation is essential for correctly interpreting texts of different genres and styles.

No less important, punctuation has a great weight in tests and competitions. Many points can be lost due to punctuation errors in essays, and a poorly punctuated sentence in a multiple choice question can confuse the candidate and lead them to mark the wrong answer.

Practical Activity: "Put Punctuation on the Tip of Your Tongue!"

Project Goal

The goal of the project is to apply and consolidate the students' understanding of punctuation in the Portuguese language. The idea is that students deepen their knowledge, learning how to use punctuation marks correctly, as well as identifying the different effects of meaning that they provide to the text.

Furthermore, promoting teamwork and collaboration between students is a relevant goal of this project. The students will need to develop skills such as effective communication, time management, problem solving, and creative thinking.

Detailed Project Description

The groups must produce a 15 to 20-minute "Radio Program" where the central theme is punctuation. The choice of the radio program format is due to the possibility of exploring, in a dynamic and interesting way, the issue of intonation in reading, something directly linked to punctuation.

The program should be divided into four main sections:

1. Theoretical Lesson: Explanation of the types of punctuation and their rules in a didactic format.

2. Interview with a Specialist: Simulation of an interview with an "expert" (a member of the group) where situations of the use of punctuation in everyday life will be discussed.

3. Radio Drama: A short story or dialogue entirely written and performed by the students, highlighting the effects of punctuation on intonation and the meanings of the text.

4. Punctuation Quiz: A quick competition of questions and answers among the group members about punctuation.

The group must deliver together with the radio program a written script containing all the content spoken in the program and the justification for the use of punctuation in each scenario, especially in the Radio Drama section.

Detailed Step-by-Step to Carry Out the Activity

1. Group Formation and Initial Planning: Divide yourselves into groups of 3 to 5 students. In a first meeting, discuss the division of tasks and the initial planning for each section of the radio program.

2. Research and Development of the Content: Each member of the group must dedicate themselves to researching and deepening their knowledge about punctuation. Use the indicated resources and seek others that can help.

3. Creation of the Script: Meet to develop the script for the radio program, writing and organizing the information that will be said in each section.

4. Rehearsal and Recording: Rehearse the reading of the script, paying attention to intonation and rhythm, then proceed with the recording.

5. Writing the Final Document: After recording, the students must prepare a report containing:

   • Introduction: Present the objective of the work, the relevance of punctuation, and the purpose of the chosen format of the radio program.

   • Development: Here, insert the script and explain the punctuation theory of each section of the program. In the case of the drama, justify the use of punctuation marks and their effects on meaning.

   • Conclusion: Reflect on the experience, the challenges encountered, the importance of teamwork, and the effectiveness of the project for learning punctuation.

   • Bibliography: List all the research materials used.

6. Review and Delivery: Review the report and the radio program to make sure that they are in accordance with the guidelines. Deliver the produced content by the established deadline.
