It is widely used in our daily lives, from simple situations like asking someone to close the door, to more complex situations like a director instructing employees in a meeting. We often hear or use phrases in the imperative mode, but we may not always realize it.

The standard and colloquial forms of the imperative mode refer to the formal and informal ways of expression, respectively. In the standard form, grammatical rules are strictly followed, while in the colloquial form, we may find some flexibilities that are accepted in informal communication contexts but would not be accepted in a formal context, such as in an academic text, for example.

Understanding the imperative mode in standard and colloquial forms is important for the ability to comprehend and make oneself understood in the world. For example, in a job interview, we should know how to use the standard form of the imperative, while in a conversation with friends, the colloquial form is more accepted and natural.

Furthermore, knowledge of these forms is essential for writing. Whether in the production of a formal text for school or for a personal blog, mastering the imperative mode and its variations can make the difference between expressing oneself clearly or confusingly.

Activity Title: "Unraveling the Imperative Mode: Theater and Radio Challenge"

Project Objective:

The main objective of the project is to allow students to explore and deeply understand the use of the imperative mode in standard and colloquial varieties through a practical, playful, and collaborative activity that involves creating a theater play and a radio program.

Detailed Project Description:

In this activity, groups of students will be invited to create and perform a theater play and a radio program. The idea is for students to use these two different forms of communication to explore the use of the imperative mode in standard and colloquial varieties.

The theater play should be written in the colloquial mode, using all the knowledge that students have acquired about the imperative mode in this form. The theme of the play is free, as long as it makes extensive use of the imperative mode.

The radio program will be an opportunity for students to experience the standard variety of the imperative mode. Groups can decide on the format of the program, such as a news bulletin, an interview program, or a debate program.

Students will have to write the script for the play and the radio program, rehearse, and then perform/record. The recording of the radio program can be done using the students' own cell phones.

Required Materials:

• Paper and pen to write the scripts.
• Cell phone with audio recording capability.
• Internet access for research.
• Clothing and other accessories for the theater play.

1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
2. Each group should choose the theme for the theater play and the format of the radio program.
3. The groups should research the use of the imperative mode in its standard and colloquial forms.
4. Write the script for the play and the radio program, making sure to extensively use the imperative mode.
5. Rehearse the play and prepare the radio program.
6. Perform the theater play and record the radio program.
7. Present the performed play and the recorded radio program to the class.
