Key Concepts

The syntax of the Portuguese language, as with many languages, is rich and complex, encompassing various concepts that help us understand the structure of our sentences. We will dive into one particularly important aspect of syntax: sentence complements.

Sentence complements are words or groups of words that complete the meaning of verbs; that is, they are necessary for the verbal action to have complete meaning. There are two types of complements: the direct object and the indirect object. The direct object is the complement that is directly linked to the verb, without the need for a preposition, and answers the questions "who?" or "what?". The indirect object, on the other hand, needs a preposition to connect to the verb and answers the questions "of whom?", "to whom?", "for whom?", among others.

On the other hand, the agent of the passive is an element that appears in passive sentences and indicates who performs the action of the verb. It is introduced by the prepositions "por" or "de". The nominal complement is linked to a noun (noun, adjective, or adverb), completing its meaning.

Importance and Real-World Applications

Sentence complements are essential for clarity and precision in the structure of our sentences. When we speak, write, or read, we use these concepts, often without realizing it. However, by studying them, we can improve our ability to express our ideas more accurately.

Understanding these concepts is not only important for our communication skills in Portuguese, but also for learning other languages. Knowing the structure of our sentences and how the different elements interact with each other gives us a solid foundation for understanding the syntax of other languages.

Hands-on Activity

Title: "Unveiling the Secrets of Sentences: A Journey Through Sentence Complements and Beyond"

Project Goal

This project aims not only to educate students about sentence complements but also to engage them in a fun and collaborative learning process. Through this project, students will:

• Deepen their knowledge of sentence complements;
• Develop the ability to identify and apply these concepts in texts;
• Work together to write and perform a theater script;
• Write a detailed report on the project.

Project Description

The project consists of creating and performing a play whose theme centers around sentence complements. Each group will be responsible for developing a script that incorporates examples of direct and indirect objects, agent of the passive, and nominal complement, as well as producing and acting in the play. The script should be rich in dialogues that illustrate the use of complements.

Throughout the project, students will be challenged to explore the intersection between Portuguese Language and Dramatic Arts, bringing grammatical concepts to life through theatrical performance.

Required Materials

1. Grammar books, reference websites, and videos for research;
2. Paper and pen for script development;
3. Any materials/resources for scenery, costumes, and props that students wish to include in the play.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Research (3 hours): Initially, students should research about sentence complements using the suggested resources and any other available materials. They should focus on understanding the concepts and how they are applied in sentences.

2. Script Planning (3 hours): After the research, students will move on to script planning. They should make sure that the script is rich in dialogues that illustrate the use of sentence complements.

3. Script Writing (6 hours): Students should now write the complete script, ensuring that it includes narrative elements such as introduction, conflict, and resolution, as well as abundant examples of the concepts that are the focus of this project.

4. Rehearsals (8 hours): Once the script is complete, rehearsals for the play can begin. During rehearsals, students should experiment with different ways of expressing grammatical concepts through their acting.

5. Performances (2 hours): Each group will perform their play for the class. The performances should be video recorded for further evaluation.

6. Final Report (8-12 hours): After the performance, each group should work on the final report. This report should address the central theme of the project, include the play's script, highlight examples of the grammatical concepts in the script, and reflect on the project's process and outcomes.

Project Deliverables

• Play Script: Must be submitted before the performances and reviewed by the teacher.
• Play Performance: Will be evaluated during the presentation and through the video recording.
• Final Report: Should be submitted after the performance. The report should follow the format mentioned at the beginning of this document, addressing the four main topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used. In the introduction, students should contextualize sentence complements, their relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of the play. In the development, they should explain the theory behind sentence complements, present in detail the play created, indicate the methodology used and finally present and discuss the effects of meaning of sentence complements in the script. In the conclusions, they should explain what they learned throughout the project and how the practice of putting together a script and performing a play contributed to this learning. Finally, in the bibliography, they should indicate the sources they used to work on the project.

Students should keep in mind that, in addition to the technical criteria, this project aims to evaluate their time management, communication, problem solving, creative thinking, and proactive skills.
