Contextualization
Theater is a form of art that involves presenting a story or situation to an audience. It has its origins in Ancient Greece and for centuries has been a platform for expressing ideas, feelings, social and political critiques, among other things. This study will address the function of theater, exploring issues such as the role of theater in society, the importance of collective work in a theater group, and the social component that defines theater.
Over time, theater has become one of the most influential and remarkable forms of art, not only for its entertainment potential, but also for its ability to foster reflection and evoke emotions. Theater offers a unique cultural experience, as it provides a safe space to express diverse perspectives and experiences, as well as promoting empathy by putting us in the shoes of others.
Introduction
Examining the function of theater requires addressing its close connection with society and culture. Theater is a mirror of society, reflecting its norms, values, conflicts, and aspirations. Thus, it becomes a powerful pedagogical tool that plays a crucial role in building individuals' critical and identity sense.
Theater is not a solitary activity and requires intense collaborative work. In it, various roles are performed: we have the director, the actors, the set designer, the costume designer, the lighting designer, among others. Each of these roles is crucial to the overall performance of the show, requiring particular skills and contributing uniquely to the overall experience of a theatrical production.
A crucial element to be addressed is the physical dimension of theater: it takes place in specific space and time, involving direct interaction between actors and the audience. This quality makes each performance unique and unrepeatable, challenging us to think about the ephemerality of art and how bodily presence and live action affect how we receive and interpret the story.

Practical Activity
Activity Title: "The Function of Theater in Society: A Collective Exploration"
Project Objective:
This project aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of the role of theater in society and the collaborative work involved in a theatrical production. Students will research, plan, and stage a play that explores an important social theme of today.
Detailed Project Description:
Students will form groups of 3 to 5 people, each of which will select a relevant social theme that will be the focus of their play. Through research and discussion, students will plan, write, rehearse, and present their play, exploring and reflecting on the function of theater in society.
In the groups, students will be responsible for the conception and realization of their play, covering a variety of roles, from scriptwriting, acting, directing, set design, costumes, among others. This will allow them to understand the importance of collaborative work in theater and provide valuable practice in project management and teamwork.
Required Materials:
- Space for rehearsals and presentation
- Writing material for the script
- Props and costumes
- Lighting and sound equipment (if available)
Detailed Step-by-Step:
-
Discussion of themes and group formation: Students should form groups and discuss possible social themes for the play. The choice of theme should be consensual and relevant to the community.
-
Research: Each group should thoroughly research their chosen theme. This includes reading news, articles, research, books, and attending other plays. The research should be documented and properly cited for later reference.
-
Scriptwriting: Using the research conducted, the group should write a script for their play. The script should reflect the chosen theme and demonstrate the function of theater as a form of social expression.
-
Rehearsal and preparation: With the complete script, students should start rehearsing for the play. This includes memorizing lines, practicing movements and expressions, and organizing props and costumes.
-
Project execution and final presentation: After thorough preparation, each group will present their play. Each presentation should be recorded on video for analysis and further discussion.
-
Report elaboration: Based on their research, experiences, and presentations, each group should write a detailed project report that includes an introduction to the theme, a detailed description of the play and its elements, an analysis of the team's experience, and conclusions drawn.
Project Deliverables:
-
Play script: The play script must be delivered and clearly present the addressed social theme.
-
Play presentation: The play must be presented to the class and recorded on video.
-
Written report: Each group must write a detailed report on the project. The report should include:
- Introduction: Description of the chosen theme and its social relevance. The project's objective and the importance of the role of theater in society should also be discussed.
- Development: Detailed explanation of the play creation process, including the research conducted, script preparation, and project execution. The methodology adopted and challenges faced should be described.
- Conclusions: Recap of the main points of the project, reflection on the team working experience and the learnings obtained. Discussion on how the play helped understand the function of theater in society.
- Bibliography: List of all sources consulted during the project, including books, websites, videos, among others.
