Expansion of the English Language

Context

The English language is, undeniably, one of the most spoken and influential languages in today's world. But have you ever wondered how this came to be? How did a language spoken by a small group of people in the British Isles end up spreading across the globe and becoming essential for global communication, science, business, and politics? In this project, we will explore the phenomenon of English language expansion, through which you will gain a new perspective on the language you study at school.

Historically, English spread around the world in different ways. One way was through the colonization of territories in North America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Another way that English gained global prominence was through economic and political influence. This is because many of the last century's scientific breakthroughs and technological innovations were led by English-speaking countries, such as the United States and the United Kingdom.

Introduction

In this project, we will investigate the main reasons for the expansion of the English language and how this has affected the world we live in today. You will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group will focus on a particular aspect of English expansion. Some groups may focus on geographical expansion, economic influences, the spread of science in English, or other relevant topics.

To begin your investigation, you can use the following reliable resources in English:

  1. Book: “The English Language Empire” by Robert Phillipson. The book provides an in-depth analysis of the role of English in globalization and global politics.
  2. Website: BBC - The BBC's English learning section provides a wide range of materials and resources on the English language and its global influence.
  3. Documentary: “Do You Speak English?” by the BBC. This documentary explores the importance of the English language in the contemporary world.

Remember, collaboration is key to this project. Work together, share ideas, and take this opportunity to learn more about the fascinating world of the English language!

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Exploring the Expansion of English Language

Project Goal

The goal of this project is to investigate the expansion of the English language and its global impacts by creating a collaborative, interactive timeline. Each group will focus on a specific aspect of the expansion, such as colonization, economic and political influence, English-language science and technology, or other relevant topics.

Detailed Project Description

This project will require research, collaboration, and presentation skills. Through the project, students will experience different facets of studying the English language, moving beyond grammar and vocabulary to understand its global impact.

Each group should select an aspect of English language expansion to investigate. Groups will then develop an interactive timeline featuring the most important events related to the expansion of English, detailing what happened, when and why, and explaining the consequences of these events.

Materials Required

  • Internet access for research
  • Stationery such as paper, pens, pencils, etc.
  • Presentation software, such as PowerPoint or Google Slides, to create the interactive timeline and final presentation.

Detailed Step-by-Step Activity Instructions

  1. Form groups: Students should divide themselves into groups of 3 to 5 members.
  2. Choose a focus: Each group should select an aspect of English language expansion to study.
  3. Research: Groups should research their chosen topic, using the suggested resources and any others that are relevant. It is important for groups to use a variety of sources to ensure the depth and breadth of their research.
  4. Create an interactive timeline: Using the information gathered in their research, students should design and build an interactive timeline that shows the most important events and their consequences. Timelines should be clear, accurate, and visually appealing.
  5. Prepare a presentation: Each group should prepare a 10-15 minute presentation explaining the key points on their timeline. The presentation should include an explanation of why they chose the events they did, what impact these events had on the expansion of the English language, and what the global consequences were.
  6. Present: Groups should present their timelines and their findings to the class.

Project Deliverables

  • An interactive timeline detailing the major events in the expansion of the English language in relation to your chosen aspect.
  • An oral presentation detailing your timeline, your choices, and your conclusions.
  • A written report on the activity as instructed, containing:
    1. Introduction: The group should provide context for the topic, its real-world relevance and application, and the project goal.
    2. Development: The group should explain the theory behind the project's central theme, detail the activity, provide the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
    3. Conclusion: The group should conclude by restating their main points, explaining what was learned, and drawing conclusions about the project.
    4. Bibliography: The group should provide a list of sources used to complete the project, such as books, websites, videos, etc.
