Contextualization
Theoretical Introduction
Food is essential for the survival and health of all human beings. The choice of the foods we consume and the way they are prepared can have a great impact on our health, economy, and the environment. Learning about food goes beyond just knowing the name of each food.
Our relationship with food is cultural and is influenced by a variety of factors such as family traditions, food trends, media, and the availability of food in our region. Therefore, by learning about food, we are also learning about the culture, history, and economy of a place.
The English language is a powerful tool for obtaining knowledge, as it is the most widely used language in the production of academic texts, research articles, books, websites, and many other learning resources. Knowing the vocabulary of food and beverages in English will allow you to access a vast amount of information about nutrition, health, cooking, cultural traditions, among other topics.
Contextualization
Food is such an integral part of our lives that we often do not think about the numerous ways it influences and is influenced by society. An interdisciplinary approach to learning about food allows us to see the connections between food and the economy (such as the influence of globalization on diets), food and society (how food traditions can unite or divide groups of people), and food and health (how diet influences our health and well-being).
For example, by learning about the origin of coffee, you will not only understand how it is produced, but also learn about the importance of coffee in the economy of many countries, how it became such a popular drink around the world, and the role of coffee in the history and culture of different societies.
In this project, you will have the opportunity to explore the theme of food from various perspectives and, at the same time, develop your English skills.

Activity Title
"Food and Culture: A World Cuisine Exploration"
Project Objective
The objective of the project is for students to research, plan, and present a virtual exhibition on the cuisine of an English-speaking country, focusing on English vocabulary, the cultural origins of dishes, and the economic and social relationships of food in the chosen country. In addition, students will select a representative recipe from that country and perform a demonstration of it, recording a video in English.
Detailed Project Description
For this project, groups will be formed by 3 to 5 students and will have a total of 12 hours of work per student to complete it, divided into two weeks of work.
The project will be developed as follows:
-
Country Selection: Each group will choose one of the English-speaking countries for study (e.g., United States, England, Australia, Canada, etc.).
-
Research: Students will conduct comprehensive research on the cuisine of the chosen country, focusing on the following topics:
- Food and Beverages: English vocabulary of typical dishes, ingredients, and kitchen utensils;
- Culture: Cultural origins of main dishes;
- Economy and Society: How food plays a role in the country's economic sector and the social traditions linked to it.
-
Virtual Exhibition Plan: The group will plan a virtual exhibition that will address the researched topics. The group will need to organize the information clearly and in English, and also decide on the best format to present each section (it can be through slides, short videos, infographics, etc.)
-
Recording of Recipe Demonstration Video: The group will select a representative recipe from the country and perform a demonstration of it, recording a video in English. During the video, in addition to preparing the recipe, students should explain the relevance of that dish in the country's culture, as well as the vocabulary of foods, ingredients, and utensils used.
-
Assembly of the Virtual Exhibition and Video Editing: The group will finalize the virtual exhibition and edit the recipe video, if necessary.
-
Project Presentation: Groups will present the project to the class, discussing the main points of their research and showing the recipe video.

Each of these items should complement the other. The written report should include a detailed description of the research and execution of the project, while the virtual exhibition should be a visual and interactive reflection of the research conducted, and the video should be an immersive experience in the cultural context that was researched.
