Economically, urbanization is closely linked to transformations in agricultural production and the expansion of structural unemployment. As the population moves from rural to urban areas, the agricultural sector undergoes intense mechanization, increasing productivity but also raising the unemployment rate, especially among those with low qualifications. At the same time, financial capital plays an increasingly important role in the urban economy, influencing the dynamics of the real estate market, infrastructure development, and the provision of essential services.

Socially, urbanization brings to light a multicultural environment, marked by the coexistence of different ethnic and cultural groups. Cities are spaces of encounter and confrontation of cultures, where differences are both a source of cultural enrichment and of conflicts and tensions. Therefore, understanding cultural diversity is essential for understanding urban dynamics.

In this scenario, Geography as a discipline plays a crucial role, since it provides theoretical tools to understand the processes of urbanization and their repercussions on people's lives and the configuration of the territory. Thus, the study of the urban world allows students to understand the transformations that have occurred in the world, while also helping them to prepare to live in this constantly changing world.

For this reason, I invite you to embark on this journey through the urban world, exploring its multiple dimensions and reflecting on its challenges and potential. To assist in this adventure, I suggest reading the book "Urbanization in Brazil", by Milton Santos, which provides an in-depth analysis of the urbanization process in Brazil. Additionally, the documentary "Unequal Cities", available on YouTube, is an excellent source for understanding the issue of urban inequality in different parts of the world.

Practical Activity: "Cities in the Mirror: Portraits of the Urban World"

Project Objective

Conduct detailed research on a selected city to understand the urbanization process and its social, economic, and cultural implications. The final objective is to produce a "portrait" of this city that highlights its particularities and represents its complexity in a critical and creative way.

Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will be responsible for choosing and studying a city in depth. Students must choose cities from different parts of the world, so that they can compare and contract the different forms of urbanization. The research should cover the suggested topics below and the final representation of the city can be done in several ways: a poster with infographics, a video, a slide presentation, an interactive website, among other ideas that the students may suggest.

Necessary Materials

• Internet access for research
• Materials for the production of the "city portrait" (depending on the chosen format, these may include paper, pens, image/video editing software, etc.)

Step by Step

1. Choose a city: The city to be studied must be decided by consensus by the group. Students must justify their choice by explaining the relevance of the city to the study of urbanization.

2. Research: Students must research the chosen city in depth, covering the following topics:

• History of the city's urbanization
• Social and economic impacts of urbanization
• Particular cultural expressions of the city
• Current challenges of the city related to urbanization

3. Compilation of data: After the research, students must compile the data and information collected, organizing it in a cohesive and logical way.

4. Creation of the Portrait: Students must use the collected data to create the "portrait" of their city. This portrait should be both informative and creative, and should represent the complexity of urban life in the studied city.

5. Writing of the report: In parallel with the creation of the portrait, students must write a report detailing their research and explaining the process of creating the portrait. This report must follow the structure of Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

The duration of this project is one month, with an estimated 5 to 10 hours of work per student.

Project Deliverables

• City portrait: as described above, this can be in the format of a poster, video, slide presentation, website, etc.

• Written report: this report should detail the research conducted by the students and explain the process of creating the portrait. It should include the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of the chosen city, justification for the choice, and objectives of the research.
  2. Development: Detailed description of the research conducted, including the topics covered (history of urbanization, social and economic impacts, cultural expressions, and current challenges), the research methods used, and the main results obtained.
  3. Conclusions: Review of the main points of the research, reflections on the process and the lessons learned, and a critical analysis of the situation of the studied city in the context of global urbanization.
  4. Bibliography: List of all sources consulted during the research.

This project will provide students with an in-depth understanding of the urbanization process, allowing them to critically analyze its implications in different contexts and develop research, collaboration, and creativity skills. Furthermore, by documenting their research and reflections in a written report, students will have the opportunity to improve their writing and argumentation skills.
