Europe: Environmental Issues

Context

The European continent is well known for its technological advances, rich culture, and history. However, with the increase in industrialization and urbanization, a serious problem has emerged: environmental degradation. This issue is of great importance as it directly impacts not only the European population but the entire planet since environmental issues transcend geographical borders.

Environmental problems in Europe are varied, including global warming, air and soil pollution, depletion of natural resources, ocean acidification, and much more. Understanding these problems, their causes and consequences, as well as the attempts at solutions, is crucial for the formation of you, conscious and participative citizens of the future.

Introduction

The environmental impacts generated by the process of industrialization and urbanization are not a recent phenomenon. The Industrial Revolution, which began in Europe, brought with it a series of socioeconomic changes that drastically increased pressure on the environment. The production and circulation of products and cultures were expanded as never seen before, causing often irreparable damage to the environment.

The European continent, besides being one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases, is also responsible for vast levels of air and soil pollution. Ocean acidification, in turn, is related to the increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, much of which is produced by industrial activity. Furthermore, the excessive exploitation of natural resources has led to the depletion of these goods necessary for life on Earth.

However, Europe is not indifferent to the problem. Many European countries are leaders in sustainable development policies and investment in clean energies. Understanding these solutions and the paths taken to address environmental damage is as important as knowing the problems. All of this we will explore in our project.

Resources that can be used:

  2. Magazine “Environment & Society”
  3. Report “The environment in Europe - state and outlook 2020”
  4. Video What is Europe doing to combat climate change?

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Diagnosis of Environmental Problems in Europe

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to conduct an in-depth study on environmental problems in Europe, analyze their causes, consequences, and possible solutions. The study should be presented in the form of a research report and an audiovisual presentation, which will include a podcast or video consolidating the group's findings.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will be assigned to a specific European country. Students must investigate the main environmental problems faced by the assigned country, their causes and impacts, as well as the actions being taken to mitigate these problems.

The work will be divided into two main parts:

  1. Research and Report Writing: Students must research and document their findings in a detailed report addressing the following topics:
  • Introduction to the Geography and environment of the chosen country.
  • Main environmental problems faced by the country and their causes.
  • Impacts of these problems on the population's life and the economy.
  • Actions taken to mitigate these problems and their effectiveness.
  • Proposal of innovative solutions to deal with the identified problems.

The work will involve not only the discipline of Geography but also Science and History. Students will have to study and understand the industrialization process of the country, the historical impact on culture and society, and how all of this translates into current environmental problems.

  1. Audiovisual Presentation: The second part of the project will be the creation of a podcast or video by the group, highlighting the findings of the report. This material should be informative, engaging, and concise.

Necessary Materials

  • Internet access for research
  • Reference books on Geography, History, and Science
  • Software for text editing and creating presentations/podcasts/videos

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Completion

  1. Each group must choose a European country to analyze.
  2. Conduct intensive research on the environmental problems that this country is facing.
  3. Groups must divide the work into parts to cover all aspects of the project.
  4. Write the report, including all necessary parts: introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography.
  5. Create an audiovisual presentation, podcast, or video, summarizing the findings of the report.
  6. Review both deliverables (report and presentation) to ensure the quality of the content.

Project Deliverables

Students must deliver a written report and an audio/video presentation.

The report must contain the sections of Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. The Introduction should contextualize the chosen theme, its objective, and relevance. The Development should detail the environmental problems found, their causes, impacts, and the proposed solutions. The Conclusions should address the project's learnings and the group's final conclusions. The Bibliography should cite all sources used in the research.

The audiovisual presentation should consolidate the findings of the report in a more visual or audible way. It should be creative and engaging, capable of conveying the message clearly and concisely.

The duration of this project should be approximately 12 hours per student, including research time, report writing, creation of the audiovisual presentation, and review.
