Throughout their existence, the UN and other similar bodies have played a key role in maintaining world peace, promoting human rights, combating poverty, and coordinating efforts to address global challenges such as climate change, to name a few of their functions.

Introduction

The UN was created in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II, with the intention of preventing the emergence of a third global-scale conflict. Its founding members, which included both victors and losers of the war, established as their main objectives the promotion of international peace and security, the fostering of friendly relations among nations, and international cooperation in solving economic, social, cultural, and humanitarian problems.

To understand contemporary geopolitical issues, it is essential to understand how European hegemony was exercised in various regions of the planet, especially in situations of conflict, military interventions, and cultural influence. The role of international corporations and global economic organizations in the global economy and in people's lives is another key topic that will be addressed.

Another important theme is the value of the distinct cultural manifestations of ethnic minorities that help us understand cultural diversity on a global scale and the importance of respecting differences.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Diplomats in Action: Simulating the UN and Intergovernmental Organizations"

Project Objective

In this activity, students will simulate the functioning of an intergovernmental organization, specifically the UN, referring to the real experiences of member countries in dealing with political, economic, cultural, and humanitarian issues. Through this active immersion, students are expected to gain a better understanding of the functions and complexities of these organizations, the importance of international cooperation, and the impact of decisions made on the lives of people around the world.

At the end of the project, students must submit a detailed report on the experience, addressing the challenges and solutions encountered, reflecting on the role and importance of intergovernmental organizations in current geopolitics.

Project Description

The activity will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students, with one month for the preparation and execution of the project. Each group will represent a delegation from a UN member country, receiving a dossier with general information about the country and a specific issue to discuss and resolve.

The groups must prepare for a simulated debate, where they will present their positions, negotiate with other delegations, and seek to approve resolutions. The project will culminate in a simulation of a UN conference, where the groups will confront each other in debates and negotiations.

Required Materials

• Internet access for research on the country represented and the designated topic.
• Paper and pen to jot down and plan the discussions and negotiations.
• Adequate space for the simulation of the conference.

Step by step

1. Form the groups and hand each one a dossier on the country they will represent and the issue to be addressed. Issues can range from international conflicts, humanitarian crises, environmental issues, among others.
2. Schedule weekly guidance and feedback meetings with each group to monitor progress, clarify doubts, and guide research and preparation.
3. Instruct students to research and deeply understand the geopolitical, economic, cultural, and humanitarian issues of the country they represent, as well as that country's position on the specific issue assigned to them.
4. Ask students to prepare a presentation on their country's position, proposals for resolving the issue, and a negotiation strategy.
5. Simulate a UN conference, where each group will present its position, negotiate with other delegations, and try to resolve the proposed problem.
6. Have each group prepare a written report on the experience, reflecting on the process, the challenges faced, the solutions proposed, and the importance of intergovernmental organizations.
