Context

The economic development and quality of life of a country or region are directly linked to the way and the amount of energy they are able to generate and distribute. The energy matrix is a term we use to describe the set of energy sources that a country has available and how it uses them to meet its energy needs.

In the European context, energy matrices are of great importance, as Europe, being composed of a variety of countries with different cultures, geographies, and economies, presents a considerable diversity in its sources and uses of energy. Some countries rely more on nuclear energy, such as France, while others, like Denmark, have heavily invested in wind energy. Understanding European energy matrices is therefore a way to better understand the cultural, economic, and political differences among European countries.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Energizing Europe

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to learn about the energy matrices of European countries, understanding their peculiarities and environmental, economic, and social implications. In addition, students will develop research skills, data analysis, teamwork, and report presentation.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group will be responsible for researching in-depth about the energy matrix of a specific European country, which will be assigned by the teacher.

Students will have to research the types of energy used, the proportion of each type in the country's energy matrix, the reasons for the use of these specific energy sources (taking into account geographical, political, economic, and social aspects), as well as the technologies employed, the companies involved in this sector, and the associated environmental impacts.

In addition, students should provide a historical and future perspective on energy use in the country, discussing significant changes over time and future projections or planned energy policies.

Required Materials

  1. Computer with internet access for research.
  2. Paper and pen for notes.
  3. Graphic presentation software (e.g., Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides).

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Research: Each group should start the project with intensive research on the assigned country's energy matrix. They should gather information on the percentage division of the country's energy matrix, the technology used for energy generation, the companies involved in this sector, the environmental impacts of energy generation, and the history and future policies of energy use in the country.

  2. Data Analysis: After the research, each group should analyze what they have learned and how it relates to the broader context of Europe and the world. They should consider how the country's energy matrix relates to its geography, economy, and policies.

  3. Report Preparation and Presentation: Finally, each group should prepare a detailed written report and a visual presentation based on their findings. The presentation should include graphs, images, and other visual elements to illustrate their discoveries.

  4. Presentations: Each group should present their findings to the class in a seminar format.

Project Deliverables

According to the activities carried out during the project, the final deliverables will include:

  1. A detailed written report containing:

    • Introduction: Contextualize the energy matrix of the studied country, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the project's objective.

    • Development: Explain in detail the country's energy matrix, the energy sources used, the proportion of each one, the reasons for this distribution, the technologies used, the environmental impacts, the history of energy use, and planned future policies. Discuss the methodology used and the results obtained.

    • Conclusion: Summarize the main points, explain the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the energy matrix of the studied country.

    • Bibliography: Indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

  2. A visual presentation to accompany the written report, presenting their findings in a graphical and interesting way.

This project should take at least 12 hours for each student to complete, allowing time for research, data analysis, report preparation, and presentation.
