Context

Europe is one of the smaller but most densely populated regions in the world. With a history marked by migrations, wars, scientific progress, cultural advance and political strife, Europe has today a diverse population and a highly developed economy. The continent hosts several of the world’s top economies like Germany, United Kingdom, and France.

However, just as any place in the world, Europe faces challenges. Understanding which challenges - aging population, economic disparities, the impact of globalization, and European integration are - is imperative to comprehend Europe’s role in the world and our position in it as global citizens.

Our job now is to explore these issues further, to develop a better understanding of the world we live in. We will be doing so in groups, undertaking a series of activities that will enable us to analyze the issues with more practical, hands-on approaches.

To begin, I suggest you look into your Geography textbooks as well as the online resources linked below that provide valuable information on our topic:

1. Europe - World Bank Data : provides up-to-date economic and demographic data of European countries.
2. World Factbook: the CIA Factbook has a section on each country of the world including maps and up-to-date statistics.
3. Europa.eu: provides information on EU member countries
4. BBC News Europe: BBC’s news section on Europe offers the latest headlines as well as informative features on European affairs and current events
5. The Economist: This widely-read publication provides in-depth analysis of current affairs, including those related to Europe.

Keep in mind: online resources are great tools but remember to always refer back to your textbooks and other trusted sources! And remain critical of what you read, developing your ideas and opinions as you learn.

Practical Activity: “Exploring Europe's Economics and People”

Project Objective:

In this hands-on activity, students will collectively build a solid understanding of the economy, population, and political dynamics of the European continent. The project requires research, group analysis, and discussions to gain a broader and clearer perspective of the topic. Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 people.

Detailed Project Description:

The students will be divided into groups and each group will receive a different task based on a specific aspect of our study : economics, demography, politics, culture and environment.

Each group will research relevant data and analyze the information found and finally present their findings in a clear and interesting way to the whole class. Students will prepare slideshow presentations, data charts, and write a short report about their discoveries.

Materials needed:

• Internet access for research
• Reference books and course materials
• Presentation software like Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc
• Paper and pens for note taking

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Forming groups : Students will form groups of around 3-5 people depending on class size and each group will be assigned a topic (economy, demography, politics, culture and environment) to focus their research and analysis on.

2. Research : Look at reliable sources on your group’s subject. This can be online resources but also your school library, or books you have at home.

3. Analyze : Discuss and understand the collected data within your group, the nuances of the subject, any disagreements and look for more resources to verify the information if necessary.

4. Synthesize : Based on the data collected, write a report in which you describe your research, findings and any conclusions. Make sure to include an introduction of the subject, develop your ideas and conclude.

5. Plan your presentations: Prepare slides that you will use to share with the class to explain the research and conclusions you came to. Make the slides informative as well as engaging.

6. Present to the class : Each team will present its findings to the rest of the class. At the end of each presentation there will be a Q&A time with the audience.

7. Feedback and reflections : After everyone has shared their work, the class will participate in discussions about the project and the subjects covered.

Deliverables of the project:

By the end of the project students, in their groups, should produce:

1. Written report: The report will have to follow a standard template, including an introduction, body, conclusion as well as bibliography. There should be a clear description of the research, the analysis and group’s main findings. The writing must be academic, easy to understand for readers, with clear articulation of the main arguments.

2. Slideshow presentation: This presentation will have to include an overview of what was done during the research, highlighting the most relevant points that were found, the conclusions reached as well as the references used in the research process. It has to be visually attractive, engaging, with the use of graphics, images or other relevant elements.

The project should take about one week to complete with an approximate time investment of 2 to 4 hours of personal work for each student. Each part (written report / presentation slides) of the project will be marked separately and will count towards the overall mark for the project.
