Contextualization

Energy is a crucial factor that sustains our modern lives. It allows us to light our homes, cook our food, travel, communicate with others, among thousands of other things. However, energy production is also closely linked to issues of sustainability, economy, politics, and technological development.

In this project, we will analyze the energy sources used in Europe, known as energy matrices. Energy matrices are the combination of energy sources that a country or region uses to meet the needs of its inhabitants and its productive sector. In Europe, there is a great variation of energy matrices among countries, which can use hydroelectric, nuclear, coal, natural gas, oil, and renewable energies, such as wind and solar.

Introduction

To understand the importance of studying energy matrices, we need to understand that each type of energy source has its advantages and disadvantages. Some, like renewable energies, are more sustainable and cause less environmental impact. Others, like oil and coal, are more polluting, but are still widely used due to their abundance and the established infrastructure for their use.

The study of European energy matrices is particularly relevant due to the leading position that many European countries take in the use of renewable energy. Furthermore, the complex interaction between energy, politics, economy, and technology is especially evident in Europe, where there is a great diversity of energy resources, energy policies, and levels of economic development.

Last but not least, in addition to being a technological issue, the use of different energy sources is also a social choice. Decisions about which energy sources to use and how to manage energy resources have profound implications for societies, including people's quality of life, the environment, and the economy.

Practical Activity

Title: "Exploring Europe's Energy Matrices"

Objective:

The purpose of this activity is to allow students to research, analyze, and present information about the energy matrices of European countries, understanding their challenges, advantages, and implications.

Activity Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants, and each group will be responsible for studying the energy matrices of a specific European country. The countries will be chosen by the teacher or drawn equitably among the groups.

The groups should research and understand the energy sources used in the chosen country, the percentages of each energy use, the advantages and disadvantages of each type, the country's energy policy, and the related socio-economic and environmental issues.

At the end of the research, each group should make a presentation in the classroom, sharing what they have learned with their peers. The presentation can be in the form of slides, videos, models, or whatever the students' creativity allows.

Required Materials:

  • Internet access for research
  • Presentation materials (computer for slide presentations, materials for models, etc.)

Activity Steps:

  1. Divide the students into groups and assign a European country to each group.
  2. Instruct the students to start their research and organize the collected information.
  3. Set a deadline for the end of the research and the start of creating materials for the presentations.
  4. Hold a presentation day in the classroom, where each group will present what they have learned.

Project Delivery:

Each group must submit a written report, along with the presentation, containing the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of the country, its importance in Europe and in the global energy scenario, and why the study of energy matrices is relevant.

  2. Development: Should include the theory of energy matrices, a detailed description of the energy sources used in the chosen country, the percentage of energy produced by each source, the country's energy policies, the advantages and disadvantages of each energy source, and the related socio-economic and environmental issues.

  3. Conclusion: Recap of the main points discussed, the lessons learned during the project, and conclusions about the energy matrices of the country studied.

  4. Bibliography: References of books, websites, videos, etc., used for research.

The presentation and the report will be evaluated both on content (accuracy and depth of research) and on presentation (clarity, presentation skills, teamwork, etc.).
