Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Exploring the Nature of Europe: A Cartographic and Artistic Reinterpretation"

Project Objective:

This project aims to encourage knowledge and reflection on the natural aspects of Europe, while promoting technical and socio-emotional skills such as time management, proactivity, creative thinking, and collaborative work.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of three to five members. Each group will be responsible for researching two natural aspects of Europe: one physical element (such as a mountain range, river, sea, etc.) and a climatic characteristic (such as Mediterranean climate, polar climate, etc.). Based on this research, the groups should create an artistic cartographic reinterpretation that represents the researched natural aspects, being a mix of a three-dimensional map and an artistic panel illustrating the impacts of these aspects on the lives of humans and other living beings in that locality.

Required Materials:

• Research materials (books, internet access, etc.)
• Drawing and painting materials (pencils, pens, paints, brushes, etc.)
• Cardboard or cardstock
• Materials for three-dimensional assembly (cardboard, clay, modeling clay, etc.)
• Glue, scissors, and other basic craft materials

Detailed Step-by-Step:

1. Each group must select a physical element and a climatic element for their research.
2. Conduct a detailed research on the chosen elements, focusing on how they influence the daily lives of the inhabitants of Europe and also on the local biodiversity. The research should include reliable sources, which should be cited in the final delivery.
3. Develop a sketch of the artistic cartographic reinterpretation, which should represent the chosen physical and climatic elements. The creation should be three-dimensional and incorporate artistic elements that are connected to the research conducted.
4. Create the three-dimensional map/artistic panel, bringing the developed sketch to life.
5. While the group works on the artistic creation, they should also organize the research data for the elaboration of a written report, following the delivery topics described in this project proposal.

Project Deliverables:

• An artistic three-dimensional cartographic reinterpretation representing the researched natural aspects.

• A written report formatted in 4 sections:

  1. Introduction: The student must contextualize the chosen physical and climatic elements for the research, their relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.
  2. Development: Here, the researched natural elements and their relationships with human lives and other living beings in the locality should be described. The activity should also be explained in detail, indicating the methodology used and presenting the findings made.
  3. Conclusion: Conclusions about the impact of the studied natural elements on the daily life of the local population and what was learned from the experience.
  4. Bibliography: Bibliographical references used to conduct the research.

Students should understand that the project deliverables are interconnected and complement each other. The presentation of the artistic three-dimensional creation should be accompanied by an oral explanation of what it represents and how it was built, which should also be detailed in the written report.
