Globalized World

Contextualization

Welcome to our educational adventure on the 'Globalized World'. This project aims to offer a comprehensive and in-depth view of the main topics shaping global society and economy.

Globalization is a complex phenomenon that involves increased interconnection between countries through trade and culture. It has its roots in historical times, but really took off with the growth of capitalism and the technological revolution. With the emergence of a global economy, borders are becoming less significant, while events in one country can have significant ramifications around the globe.

Recent history is full of moments that illustrate the ramifications of globalization. From the capitalist crisis of 1929 that triggered a global depression, to the Cold War between the USA and the Soviet Union that influenced geopolitics for decades. We have also seen the role of terrorism in destabilizing global peace and the varied responses to globalization, such as resistance movements and protectionist policies.

Importance of the Theme

This project is vital to understand the forces shaping the world we live in. By studying globalization, you will be able to understand the economic, political, and social relationships and how they affect people's lives around the world. This understanding is crucial to be an informed and engaged citizen in a globalized society.

Additionally, you will learn to work in teams, apply theoretical concepts to practical situations, and develop research and presentation skills. Learning about globalization will also help develop empathy by understanding the experiences of people in different global contexts.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Globalized Planet: A Mosaic of Stories'

Project Objective

Explore the complexity and nuances of globalization from a historical, economic, social, and cultural perspective. Each group will be responsible for investigating a specific theme related to the globalized world and presenting it creatively to the class.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, groups should analyze the multiple dimensions of globalization and its impact on current society. Each group should choose a theme related to globalization from the list below:

  • The capitalist crisis of 1929 and its repercussions on the global economy
  • Cold War, main conflicts, and geopolitical tensions
  • Political and social transformations generated by digital information and communication technologies
  • Motivations and impacts of different economic policies in Latin America
  • The phenomenon of terrorism in contemporary times
  • Identity diversities in the early 21st century

Through in-depth research, groups should develop a digital 'storyboard', a sequence of images accompanied by explanatory captions, that will narrate the story of the chosen theme and its relationship with globalization. This storyboard should be accompanied by a written report.

Required Materials

  • Computer with internet access
  • Storyboard creation software (such as Canva or Storyboard That)
  • Paper and pen for sketches and notes

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group should choose a theme from the provided list.
  3. Conduct in-depth research on the chosen theme. Use a variety of research sources, including books, articles, videos, etc.
  4. Based on the research conducted, create a sketch of the 'storyboard'. This sketch should include key information about the chosen theme and how it relates to globalization.
  5. Use storyboard creation software to make your digital storyboard.
  6. Review and refine the storyboard. Ensure that the narrative is clear and the information is correct.
  7. Alongside creating the storyboard, prepare the written report as described in the 'Project Deliveries' section.

The estimated time for the execution of this project is one month, dedicating five to ten hours per week to the project.

Project Deliveries

  • Digital storyboard: This should consist of a sequence of images that narrate the story of the chosen theme and its relationship with globalization. The images should be accompanied by explanatory captions.

  • Written report: The report should have the following sections:

    • Introduction: Provide context for the chosen theme, its relevance, the project's objective, and the theme's relationship with globalization.
    • Development: Explain the theory behind the theme, the activity in detail, the research methodology used, present and discuss the results obtained through the storyboard.
    • Conclusion: Summarize the main points, reflecting on the learnings acquired, and the conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: List all sources used for research and project development.

This practical activity guides students to investigate an aspect of globalization in depth, as well as to consolidate the information obtained in an engaging and easy-to-understand visual form. Continuing with the written report, students have the opportunity to highlight the research they have done, what they have learned, and how the chosen theme relates to the globalized world.
