Totalitarian Regimes were one of the most significant marks of the 20th century, characterized by the presence of an authoritarian leader, centralization of power, suppression of individual rights, and intensive use of propaganda. Two of the most notorious manifestations of these regimes were Fascism in Italy, under the leadership of Benito Mussolini, and Nazism in Germany, led by Adolf Hitler.

These characteristics were used as instruments to unify and revitalize the country after the war. On the other hand, Nazism in Germany, in addition to nationalism and militarism, had a strong racist and anti-Semitic character that culminated in the Holocaust, one of the greatest genocides in history.

And why is it important to study these regimes? Because they mark a critical period in history, which culminated in World War II and brought profound political and social changes to the world. Furthermore, understanding these regimes and their characteristics helps to comprehend and prevent possible resurgences of such practices.

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to provide students with a deeper understanding of totalitarian regimes, their characteristics, and impacts, through the recreation of one of these regimes (Fascism or Nazism) through theater.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 and must choose one of the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century (Fascism or Nazism) to recreate through a 15-20 minute theater play. Each group should research their chosen regime, focusing on its rise, main characteristics, the role of the leader, policies and practices, and its eventual decline.

3. Set and props (can be handmade)
4. Camera for filming the play (optional)

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

1. Each group chooses a regime (Fascism or Nazism) to recreate.
2. The groups conduct detailed research on their chosen regime, focusing on the areas highlighted in the project description. This research will be used to write the script for the play.
3. The groups create characters for their play based on historical figures and victims of the regimes.
4. Sets and props are created for the play.
5. After rehearsal, the groups present their plays to the class (they can be filmed and watched later).
