They become particularly relevant in the context of mathematics, for they are fundamental to understanding concepts such as the decomposition of numbers, the structuring of equations, and the understanding of numeric patterns.

Perfect squares also connect to the concept of surfaces and areas, since if you have a pattern of dots that can be arranged in a square matrix, then the number of these dots is a perfect square. In this sense, the ability to identify numbers as perfect squares can help visualize certain problems more effectively.

Furthermore, the comprehension of perfect squares gives the students a basis for the understanding of more complex subjects, such as the Pythagorean theorem, radicals, and operations involving polynomials.

Activity Title: "Perfect Squares: Theory and Practice"

Project Goal

This project aims to allow students to:

  • Understand the concept and importance of perfect squares in mathematics and in their real-world applications;
  • Use their knowledge to identify and manipulate perfect squares;
  • Work efficiently in teams, developing teamwork and communication skills;

Detailed Description of the Project

In this activity, students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group will be tasked with creating a board game about "Perfect Squares". The game must be designed in such a way that it makes it easier to learn the concept of Perfect Squares.

Materials required

  • Cardboard or poster board for the base of the board
  • Colored paper for decoration
  • Empty cards for questions and challenges
  • Colored markers or pens
  • Dice
  • Small objects to serve as pawns

Step-by-step guide

  1. Game Research and Planning (1 hour): Students shall research the concept of Perfect Squares online or in math textbooks. They shall plan how the concept will be incorporated into the game.
  2. Building the Board (1 hour): The team shall design the board on cardboard or poster board. The board can be creative and thematic, as long as it is related to the subject.
  3. Creating the Questions and Challenges (1-2 hours): Students shall create questions or challenges related to Perfect Squares. Sample questions/challenges: "What is the next perfect square after 36?" or "Solve the equation that represents a perfect square: x² = 49". The correct answers should allow the player to move forward in the game.
  4. Test Game (1 hour): Students shall test the game among themselves in order to check whether the rules are clear and the game is effective for the purpose of teaching about Perfect Squares.

Project Deliverables

Upon concluding the project, students should deliver:

  1. The Board Game;

  2. A typewritten Report, covering the following topics:

    • Introduction: where students must contextualize the theme, explaining its relevance and real-world application and describing the project goal.
    • Development: here, students must explain the theory of Perfect Squares, detailing the activity carried out, describing the game created, the methodology used, and discussing the results obtained with the basis of the test game.
    • Conclusion: in this section, students must revisit the main points of their work, reflecting on what they have learned during the project and about their experience working in a team.
    • Bibliography: students must list the sources of information used for the research and development of the project.

The report must be written in a clear and concise manner, respecting the grammar and orthography rules, and it must have at least 2 pages and no more than 5 pages.
