Pythagorean Theorem

Contextualization

Pythagoras was one of the most famous mathematicians of antiquity, born on the island of Samos, Greece, around 570 BC. He is most famous for a theory that bears his name: The Pythagorean Theorem, a fundamental theory for geometry that has remained relevant throughout the centuries.

The Theorem tells us that in a right triangle, the area of the square built on the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares built on the other two sides. In simpler terms, the sum of the squares of the legs is equal to the square of the hypotenuse. This theory is used in several areas of mathematics, physics, and engineering, involving concepts of Euclidean geometry, trigonometry, metric relationships, and proportions.

Pythagoras and his followers, the Pythagoreans, also made important contributions to philosophy and number theory. They introduced the idea that natural numbers have both a personality and a magical property, and these ideas are also relevant to our understanding of numbers and their properties today.

Practical application of the Pythagorean Theorem

The Pythagorean Theorem and its derivatives are essential to the physical sciences and engineering, which often need to calculate distances between points in space. For example, in architecture, the construction of ramps and steps depends directly on the Pythagorean Theorem to provide a safe and comfortable angle for use.

In everyday life, we can apply the Pythagorean Theorem in simple ways. For example, when measuring the size of a TV, the size mentioned is the measurement of the diagonal of the television, obtained using the Pythagorean Theorem. In addition, the GPS we use on our smartphones uses the principle of the Pythagorean Theorem to calculate distances in three-dimensional coordinates.

Due to its relevance, it is essential to understand and apply this theorem. Thus, this project was designed to deepen your knowledge about this important theorem and its practical applications.

Practical Activity: "Pythagoras in Action"

Project Objective

The main objective of the "Pythagoras in Action" project is to enable students to apply the Pythagorean Theorem in practice in an interdisciplinary way, integrating concepts from Mathematics, Geometry, Physics, and Arts.

In addition, the project aims to promote collaboration among students, stimulating teamwork, effective communication, time management, and innovation.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will first study the Pythagorean Theorem in depth, its implications, and applications in various fields of knowledge. Later, the groups will design and build a three-dimensional object (it can be a building, a ramp, a sculpture, etc.) using recycled materials that present the application of the Pythagorean Theorem in their structure. In addition, they should calculate all the distances and angles involved in the construction using the theorem.

Necessary materials

The materials needed to carry out this project are:

  • Recyclable materials (cardboard, pet bottles, straws, etc.)
  • Ruler
  • Compass
  • Protractor
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Calculator

Activity Step by Step

  1. Study the Pythagorean Theorem and its applications: Use the suggested didactic resources to fully understand the Pythagorean Theorem, its properties, and how it is applied in practical situations.

  2. Plan the construction: As a group, decide what type of three-dimensional object you want to build. Make a detailed sketch of the construction, showing all the dimensions and angles that will be necessary for the assembly. Remember that the Pythagorean Theorem must be used in an essential way in the construction.

  3. Build the object: Using the available recyclable materials, follow the plan and build the object. Make sure that all measurements have been observed correctly.

  4. Document the process: Throughout the construction, document the entire process. Take pictures, make notes, and observations. This will be important for the preparation of the final report.

  5. Prepare the report: Based on everything that has been observed and documented, prepare the final project report following the suggested format: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Project Delivery

The project will be delivered through a presentation of the constructed object and the delivery of the written report. In the report, students should:

  • Introduction: Provide the context of the Pythagorean Theorem and its relevance, application in the real world, and the objective of the project.
  • Development: Explain the Pythagorean Theorem and how it was applied in the construction of the object, describe in detail the construction made, the materials used, and the methodology adopted, and present and discuss the results obtained.
  • Conclusion: Review the main points of the project, describe what they learned from the experience, and what conclusions they were able to draw about the Pythagorean Theorem and its impact on the real world.
  • Bibliography: List all sources of information used during the project.

In this way, the practical application of the Pythagorean Theorem will be experienced and students will have the opportunity to perceive the impact of this theorem in various areas of knowledge.
