Theoretical Introduction

Real Numbers are all those numbers that can be represented on the number line, including rational and irrational numbers. It is indeed a huge class of numbers that plays a vital role in virtually every branch of mathematics. Moreover, they are fundamental to physics, engineering and many other exact and life sciences.

The basic operations that are performed with real numbers are: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Each of these operations has its specific rules and properties. In addition to these, exponents with fractions bring the understanding of rooting, where the fraction is the exponent, the denominator is the root index and the numerator the exponent in the radicand.

Fractional exponents may seem intimidating at first, but they are a logical extension of the concept of exponentiation. For example, a number raised to the power of 1/2 corresponds to the square root of that number, while a number raised to the power of 1/3 corresponds to the cubic root and so on.

Relevance and Contextualization of Real Numbers

Real numbers and their operations are used directly or indirectly in our daily lives. From making purchases at the supermarket, calculating distances, checking the average speed on a trip to more advanced operations such as calculating interest on bank loans, yield on financial investments, weather forecasts, engineering simulations and much more. Therefore, familiarity with this numerical universe opens up a wide range of possibilities.

In addition, real numbers are fundamental to modern science. We use real numbers to measure quantities in the real world, such as distance, time, speed, mass, energy, etc. They are also used in scientific procedures, such as in physics, chemistry, engineering, medicine and in many other fields of science.

Practical Activity: "The Challenge of Real Numbers"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to apply the theoretical knowledge of real numbers and the operations with these numbers in a practical and fun context. Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 to create and solve math problems by applying the concepts of real numbers and fractional exponents.

Detailed Description of the Project

Students will be challenged to apply their understanding of real numbers and fractional exponents in a creative and interactive way. They will create and solve problems based on everyday situations that involve real numbers, which will further enhance their understanding of the importance of real numbers in daily life.

Required Materials

  • Paper, pencils and eraser.
  • Calculator (optional).

Step-by-Step Activity

  1. Group Definition and Planning: Divide into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group should plan and organize the best way to carry out the activities.

  2. Problem Creation: Each member of the group should create two problems that involve the use of real numbers in everyday situations. The problems should include basic operations, as well as calculations with fractional exponents.

  3. Problem Exchange: After creating the problems, the groups will exchange problems with each other, so that each group will have a set of problems created by another group.

  4. Problem Solving: Now, the groups should work together to solve the problems they received. All members of the group must be involved in the discussion and solving of the problems.

  5. Report Preparation: As the group solves the problems, members should record all solutions, difficulties encountered, strategies used to solve the problems and relevant discussions.

Project Delivery

The main deliverable of this project will be a report, which should be prepared according to the instructions below:

  1. Introduction: Introduce the topic, explaining the relevance of real numbers and operations with fractional exponents in the real world.

  2. Development: Present the problems created by the group, as well as the strategies used to solve them. Comment on the main difficulties encountered and how they were overcome. Remember to record all solutions to the problems.

  3. Conclusion: Comment on the learning obtained throughout the project. Reflect on the importance of teamwork and the role of real numbers in our everyday lives.

  4. Bibliography: List the sources of information consulted during the execution of the project.

The final delivery must be made in a written report format, detailing the steps of the problem-solving process, group discussions and learning derived from the project. The deliveries will be evaluated considering the quality of the proposed problems, the correct application of theoretical concepts, creativity, clarity of the report, as well as the reflection of the learning obtained.
