Theoretical Introduction

Charts are one of the most powerful tools we have to represent and interpret data. They appear in all areas of everyday life, including news, science, business, medicine, education, and more. In short, a chart is a visual representation of quantitative or qualitative data.

One of the most important aspects of charts is their ability to express complexity in a way that is relatively easy to understand. This is done through the relationship between variables, which are the values that change, and how these variables are presented in a chart, usually on the x-axis (horizontal) and y-axis (vertical).

However, despite charts being extremely informative, they have numerous pitfalls that can lead to misinterpretation. For example, choosing inappropriate scales can make a modest increase seem like a big change, or it can mask a significant increase. Additionally, legends can be misleading if not properly explained, and the omission of important information such as sources and dates can lead to inaccurate conclusions.

Contextualization

We live in the information age, where we are constantly bombarded with data and charts in our daily lives. Therefore, the ability to read, interpret, and question the charts we encounter in our daily lives is increasingly important. Often, charts are used to influence opinions and make decisions, and an error in interpretation can lead to erroneous conclusions and, in some cases, harmful actions.

Furthermore, the ability to understand and question charts is an essential skill of the 21st century and is necessary in many careers, especially in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Therefore, understanding and the ability to correctly interpret charts, considering their possible errors and pitfalls, are fundamental skills that must be mastered.

Practical Activity

Title: Unmasking Charts

Project Objective

The objective of the project is for students to learn to identify and interpret common errors in chart creation, developing a critical view when analyzing different charts that are frequently used in daily life.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, and each group will be tasked with finding charts in the media – this may include newspapers, magazines, the internet, and TV programs – that were poorly designed or contain errors. The idea is for them to identify the problems and suggest improvements, explaining how a well-made chart should be. Students should look for examples that show errors in various aspects, including scale, legend, information sources, and date.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research;
  • Presentation materials: cardboard, colored pens, etc. (if the presentation is physical) or presentation software such as PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc. (if the presentation is digital).

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Divide into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group should research and collect at least five charts that contain errors or are poorly designed. These charts can be obtained from newspapers, magazines, the internet, and TV programs.
  3. For each collected chart, students must:
    1. Describe the chart and the context in which it was used.
    2. Identify at least one error or design problem in the chart.
    3. Explain why this error or problem could lead to an incorrect interpretation of the data.
    4. Suggest a way to correct the error or problem.
  4. After collecting and analyzing the charts, each group should prepare a presentation of their results. This presentation should include a brief description of the charts, the errors and problems found, and suggestions for improvements.
  5. Finally, each group will present their findings to the class in a 15-20 minute presentation.

Project Deliverables

Each group must deliver:

  1. The presentation of the analyzed charts, including a description of the errors and problems found and suggestions for improvements.
  2. A written document containing:
    1. Introduction: the student must contextualize the theme, its relevance and real-world application as well as the objective of this project.
    2. Development: describe and explain each analyzed chart in detail, indicate the identified errors and problems, and suggest improvements.
    3. Conclusions: comment on what was learned from the project, the challenges faced and how they were overcome, and the skills acquired.
    4. Bibliography: indicate the sources of the analyzed charts and any other resources used to help in the analysis and interpretation.

The report can follow the following format:

  1. Introduction: In this section, the motivation and purpose of the project should be described.
  2. Development: Here, students should describe, for each analyzed chart:
    1. Where the chart was found.
    2. The purpose of the chart and what it tries to communicate.
    3. The identified errors or design problems.
    4. How these errors or problems could lead to misinterpretations.
    5. How these errors or problems could be corrected.
  3. Conclusions: In this section, students should reflect on what they learned from the project.
  4. Bibliography: Here, students should list the sources of the charts they analyzed, as well as any other sources of information they used.
