Percentage: Successive Percentages

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Unveiling Successive Discounts"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to provide students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge of successive percentages to a practical and relevant scenario: the retail sector and the successive discounts applied to products.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group must imagine that they are managing a store and need to define a strategy of successive discounts to clear the stocks. The group must then create a product catalog with at least 10 items, each with its original price. They must then apply two successive discounts to each item, clearly indicating the price of the item after each discount and the final price.

The group must work collaboratively, discussing and deciding together which products to include in their catalog, what will be the original price of each item, and what percentage the first and second discounts will be.

Necessary Materials

  • Paper and pen to write down ideas and calculations
  • Calculator to perform mathematical operations
  • Computer with Internet access for research

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity

  1. Meet with your group and discuss ideas for the catalog. Decide what types of products your store will sell.
  2. Set an original price for each of your 10 products.
  3. Decide what will be the first successive discount to be applied to each product in your catalog. Remember that discounts must be realistic and attractive to customers.
  4. Calculate the price of each item after the first discount and write down these values.
  5. Now decide on the second discount to be applied to the already discounted prices of each product.
  6. Calculate again the price of each item after the second discount and write down these values.
  7. Finally, compile all the information into a product catalog, highlighting the original price and the final price of each item after the two successive discounts.
  8. Each group member should check the calculations made by the other members to ensure they are correct.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must present the product catalog containing 10 items, with the original prices, prices after the first discount, prices after the second discount, and the calculations made to reach these results.

In addition, each group must produce a report that includes:

  1. Introduction: A brief description of the project and its relevance in real life. Why is understanding percentages and successive percentages important especially when it comes to sales and purchase conditions?

  2. Development: A detailed description of the process the group went through to create the catalog. How were the products and their original prices chosen? What were the strategies behind the chosen discounts? How were the successive discounts applied and what were the resulting prices of each item after the discounts?

  3. Conclusions: What were the main learnings from the project? What were the difficulties encountered and how were they overcome?

  4. Bibliography: All resources and learning materials used by the group to understand and apply the concept of successive percentages.
