Body Awareness Gymnastics

Contextualization

Body awareness gymnastics is a practice that combines the physical, emotional, and cognitive aspects of the human being. Unlike conventional gymnastics, which often focuses on form and physical performance, body awareness gymnastics values body perception and quality of movement.

It works specially on deep breathing, mindfulness, stretching, coordination, balance, and strength. The goal is to improve posture, reduce stress, improve concentration, stimulate creativity, and increase self-esteem.

This practice is a powerful tool of self-knowledge that can be applied in various ways in daily life to improve the quality of life.

The relevance of this practice today is immense. We live in a hectic and accelerated society, where we often neglect our body and mind. Body awareness gymnastics reconnects us with ourselves, helps us understand our limitations and potential, and take care of our health with more responsibility and awareness.

In addition, activities that promote body awareness can be useful in preventing diseases, promoting health and well-being, and recovering from injuries.

For a deeper understanding of this topic, I suggest some sources:

  1. Book "Corporal Awareness Gymnastics: Theory and Practice" by Glória M. Ritter (Editora Phorte, 2012). This book offers a broad and detailed view of body awareness gymnastics.

  2. Article "Gymnastics and Body Awareness: a possible relationship?" by Franco Noce and Elise Grunspun (Revista Motrivivência, 1997). This article presents a theoretical discussion about the relationship between gymnastics and body awareness.

  3. Video "Gymnastics of Body Awareness" by the Physical Education channel (Youtube). This video presents in a practical and dynamic way some concepts of body awareness gymnastics.

Practical Activity

Title of the activity: "Embodied Awareness: A Journey of Self-Knowledge"

Objective of the project:

Understand and apply the concepts of body awareness gymnastics, develop socioemotional skills, and elaborate a critical and informative report based on the experiences.

Detailed Description of the Project:

The students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, will perform a series of body awareness gymnastic exercises. The project will have a duration of more than twelve hours per participating student. They will also conduct theoretical research and discuss the implications of these practices in their lives and society as a whole.

Materials:

  • Wide space to practice activities
  • Individual mat
  • Comfortable clothes
  • Water
  • Materials for notes (notebook, pen)
  • Computer with internet access to research

Step by Step for the activity:

  1. Theoretical Study (4 hours): Initially, students should conduct research on body awareness gymnastics concepts. This study should approach the following topics: history of body awareness gymnastics, its principles and goals, health benefits, differences and similarities with other forms of gymnastics, and the application of this practice in the real world. The group should divide these themes among its members to facilitate the research.

  2. Practice (8 hours, divided into sessions of 2 hours): After the research, students should start practicing body awareness gymnastics activities. The activities should be performed using techniques such as deep breathing, stretching, coordination and balance exercises, and strength exercises. During the practice, students should alternate between the role of instructor and practitioner, each being responsible for leading an activity.

  3. Discussion and Reflections (2 hours): Then, the students should come together to share their experiences. They should discuss how they felt during the activities and what the benefits were for their physical and mental well-being.

Project Deliveries:

At the end of the project, each group must deliver a detailed report containing the following elements:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of body awareness gymnastics practice, its relevance, and application in the real world, and objective of this project.

  2. Development: Detailed explanation of the theory behind body awareness gymnastics, detailed description of the practical activities performed, presentation of the methodology used to conduct the project, and discussion of the results and the impacts of this practice in the participants' lives.

  3. Conclusion: Resumption of the main points, description of the learning obtained, and critical discussion about the meaning of body awareness gymnastics for health, well-being, and quality of life.

  4. Bibliography: Indication of the sources used for the research and the elaboration of the project.

The written document should complement the practical experience with theoretical and discussion reflections, creating a complete and critical account of the journey of the students in discovering the practice of body awareness gymnastics.
