Contextualization

The Astronomical Unit (AU) is a distance measurement mainly used in the study of Astronomy. An Astronomical Unit is equal to the average distance between the Earth and the Sun, approximately 149.6 million kilometers. The use of this measurement is essential for understanding the enormous distances involved when studying the Universe.

Understanding the importance and necessity of the AU is the first step in better understanding the scale of our Solar System, and by extension, the Universe. It is unimaginable to try to describe the distances between different celestial bodies using everyday measures such as meters or kilometers - the scale is simply too large. Therefore, we use the Astronomical Unit to help us put these distances into a more manageable perspective.

Introduction

Many believe that Astronomy is only the study of stars, but the truth is that this science encompasses much more. Studying Astronomy means understanding everything that occurs beyond the atmosphere of our Earth. Stars, planets, galaxies, and even the radiation we cannot see - all of this is part of the study of Astronomy.

When studying different celestial bodies, we need an effective way to describe the distances between them and even their dimensions. This is where the Astronomical Unit comes in. By mastering this measurement, we can make comparisons between the distance from Earth to the Sun and the distance from other planets to the Sun.

In the following project, we will explore in depth the Astronomical Unit, learn to convert between different units of distance, and finally understand the need and importance of this measurement. Our journey will take us to the limits of our Solar System and beyond.

Practical Activity

Activity Title - Building our Solar System

Project Objective

The main objective of this project is to build a scale model of our Solar System, using the Astronomical Unit (AU) to measure the distances between the planets and the Sun. This activity will allow students to understand why we use the AU in Astronomy and how we can convert it into other units of measurement.

Detailed Project Description

Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 people and should build a model of the Solar System, placing the planets in their correct positions according to the distance in AUs to the Sun. Each group should research the distances in AUs, convert them to the chosen scale, and then build the Solar System on a sheet of cardboard or other material of their choice.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or poster board
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Pencils and colored pens
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Bottle caps or other materials to represent the planets
  • Computer with Internet access for research

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Research: Each group should research the distances of the planets from the Sun in AUs. Use the reliable resources mentioned in the introduction.

  2. Conversion: Convert the distances from AU to the chosen scale. For example, if you decide that 1 AU will be represented by 1 cm, then the farthest planet, Neptune, should be 30 cm from the Sun in your model.

  3. Drawing: Sketch a layout of the Solar System on the cardboard, marking the distances you calculated in the previous step. Use a ruler or measuring tape and a pencil for this.

  4. Construction: Cut the cardboard in the shape of a large circle. Use bottle caps or other materials to represent the planets and place them at the respective distances from the Sun.

  5. Customization: Paint and decorate your Solar System as you find most interesting. Remember to include a legend indicating the scale used and which planets are represented.

  6. Presentation: Prepare a presentation for the class explaining what the AU is, how you used it in the project, and what you learned from the activity.

  7. Documentation: Write a report detailing all the project steps, including the research conducted, the measurement conversion, the model construction, and the presentation preparation. The report should follow the structure of introduction, development, and conclusions, and include a bibliography with the sources consulted.

Project Deliverables

Students must deliver:

  1. The physical model of the Solar System to scale, with the distances between the planets and the Sun correctly represented in AUs.

  2. An oral presentation on the AU and how it was used in the project.

  3. A written report. The introduction should present the theme and relevance of the project.
