Context

The Moon, our only natural satellite, has played a pivotal role in shaping our lives since prehistoric times. It is so deeply entwined in our experience that even our bodies tend to follow its rhythm. But despite its familiarity, the moon can still be a bit of a mystery to many of us. How often have you stopped to look up at the Moon and wondered why it changes its appearance from night to night? It's a question that has puzzled humans for centuries.

The changing appearance of the Moon is due to its different phases. The phases of the Moon are the different ways that the Moon appears to us throughout the month as it orbits the Earth and moves around the Sun.

Importance

Understanding the phases of the Moon is directly connected to several aspects of our lives, both in terms of scientific knowledge and practical application. For farmers, for example, understanding the phases of the Moon is crucial for planting and harvesting, as the Moon has noticeable effects on plant growth patterns. Additionally, many cultures around the world have festivals and celebrations that are based on the phases of the Moon.

Project Goal

This activity aims for students to explore, understand, and demonstrate the various phases of the Moon and the scientific principles behind them, working in groups of 3-5 people.

Detailed Description of the Project

Students will create a three-dimensional model of the Moon's phases using low-cost and easily accessible materials. They will plan and conduct a class presentation explaining how the phases of the Moon occur using their model. Finally, they should be able to predict the upcoming phases of the Moon.

Materials

  • 8 Styrofoam or clay balls (size depends on available space, but around 2 inches in diameter is suggested)
  • 1 flashlight
  • Toothpicks
  • Black and white paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • 1 stand to hold the flashlight (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Start the activity by researching the phases of the Moon using the references provided in the context section and other sources chosen by the group.
  2. Divide the work among the group members, assigning tasks to each one. Some examples of tasks are: painting the Styrofoam balls, building the structure for the model, writing the script for the presentation, etc.
  3. Paint half of each Styrofoam ball black and the other half white, representing the Moon's phases.
  4. Insert toothpicks into the Styrofoam balls to create a way to hold each "Moon".
  5. Arrange the "Moons" in the correct sequence of the Moon phases (new, crescent, full, and waning) according to your research.
  6. Use the flashlight to represent the Sun, shining the light toward the "Moons", and observe how the phases change as the position of the light changes.
  7. Conduct the demonstration for the class, explaining the concept of each phase, what happens in the transition from one phase to another, and the factors that influence these changes.
  8. Conclude the activity by predicting the upcoming phases of the Moon based on the model they created.

Project Deliverables

In addition to the three-dimensional model of the Moon's phases, students will submit a report divided into the following sections:

  1. Introduction: Should explain the context of the work, relevance of the topic, and the goal of the hands-on activity.
  2. Development: Students should explain the theory behind the phases of the Moon, how the activity was conducted, what materials were used, the results obtained, and a discussion about those results.
  3. Conclusion: In this part, students should restate the main points of the work, what were the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn from the project.
