The existence of life beyond Earth is one of the most intriguing and complex topics we can explore in the field of Science. To fully understand this vast topic, we need to explore some fundamental concepts.

First, we have the definition of life, which has remained largely imprecise and debated throughout the history of science. Different branches of science define life in different ways. For example, biologists generally define life as any entity with abilities to feed, grow, reproduce, and adapt to its environment. For our project, we will focus on this definition.

The concepts of astrobiology and exobiology are also fundamental to our study. Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe. Exobiology is a subfield of astrobiology that specifically concerns the possibility of life beyond Earth.

Finally, we will explore the concept of habitable zones, also known as 'Goldilocks zones.' These are regions around a star where conditions may be just right for the existence of life - neither too hot nor too cold.

Real-World Applications

The search for extraterrestrial life has broad impacts on our understanding of the universe and ourselves. It can help answer some of the deepest questions we have: are we alone in the universe? How and where can life exist? How did life begin on Earth?

Furthermore, this search has significant implications in the fields of astrophysics, chemistry, biology, geology, and many others. And, perhaps more directly relevant to us, it drives advancements in space exploration technology. Space exploration has the potential to produce innovations that benefit life on Earth, as it has done in the past with the development of communication satellites, GPS technology, and much more.

Therefore, studying the possibility of life existing beyond Earth is not just a theoretical exercise but has profound implications for our daily lives.

Activity

Activity Title:

'Extraterrestrial Seekers: An Astrobiological Investigation'.

Project Objective:

Students, working in groups of 3 to 5, should research the existence of life on other planets, understand the necessary conditions for life to exist, and present their findings in the form of an oral presentation and a detailed scientific article.

Detailed Project Description:

The activity will be carried out in stages. Students must first choose one or more planets (or moons) to research. They should then research the current conditions of this celestial body, considering factors such as atmosphere, chemical composition, proximity to its star, temperature, presence of water, and more.

Students should then analyze whether the conditions of this celestial body are suitable for life as we know it or for any form of life that may exist under different conditions.

Additionally, students should prepare a mission plan to explore this celestial body, addressing the difficulties and problems they could face, such as travel and survival in space, as well as the technology that would be necessary for such a mission.

Finally, students will present their results to the class in the form of a mini-conference, where each group will be a set of experts on their chosen celestial body.

Students will have 4 weeks to complete this project.

Required Materials:

Students will need access to research resources such as books, scientific journals, and internet access. They will also need materials to prepare their presentation, possibly including materials to create slide presentations.

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. Formation of groups and choice of the celestial body(ies) to investigate.

  2. Intensive research on the existing conditions on this/these celestial body(ies) and whether it/they is/are suitable for life, as we define it or even as it could be conceived in other terms.

  3. Development of a plan for an exploration mission to this/these celestial body(ies), addressing the difficulties and challenges that such a mission could face.

  4. Preparation of the presentation for the mini-conference, as well as the detailed scientific article.

  5. Practice of the presentation and final review of the article.

  6. Presentation at the mini-conference and submission of the article.

Project Deliverables and Connection to Activities:

Students must deliver the oral presentation of the project and a detailed and well-formatted scientific article. The presentation should last between 10 and 15 minutes, covering the main points of their study. The scientific article should be at least 5000 words and should contain the following topics:

Introduction: Students must contextualize their chosen celestial body, discuss why the existence of life there would be relevant, and explain the purpose of their project.

Development: Students must detail their celestial body, discuss the possible forms of life that could exist there based on its current conditions, present the exploration plan, and discuss its difficulties and challenges.

Conclusions: Students must recap their main points, discuss what they have learned about the possibility of life beyond Earth, and the challenges of space exploration.

Bibliography: Students must indicate all sources they used to work on the project.

This practical activity is related to the recommended resources and concepts from the introduction and contextualization phase. By carrying out this activity, students will use and deepen their knowledge of extraterrestrial life, astrobiology, exobiology, and habitable zones.
