Introduction

Mixtures are all around us. It is hard to go a day without interacting with some type of mixture, whether it be a fruit smoothie, the air we breathe, or the concrete that makes up the buildings around us. Mixtures are combinations of two or more substances in varying proportions. One of the most interesting and important characteristics of mixtures is the existence of phases, which are different uniform parts of the mixture.

There are two main types of mixtures, homogeneous and heterogeneous. Homogeneous mixtures are those in which we cannot see the different components that make it up, like air, while heterogeneous mixtures are those in which we can see the different components that make it up, like a fruit salad. The number of phases in a mixture is a fundamental concept in understanding the difference between these two types of mixtures.

Background

The concept of phases is one of the central topics in chemistry, and it is essential for understanding the nature of matter. A phase is a region of matter that has uniform chemical composition and physical properties. This means that different phases have different properties.

All over the world, engineers, scientists, and designers use the concept of phases to design new products, solve problems, and make innovations. For example, in the food industry, understanding phases is crucial to producing foods like ice cream, mayonnaise, and chocolate, which are complex mixtures of multiple phases.

Objective

Project Description

The project consists of 1) creating mixtures from a variety of materials, 2) observing these mixtures, 3) identifying and counting the number of phases each mixture has, and 4) researching and understanding the theory behind it.

  • Clear glass cups
  • Water
  • Oil
  • Sand
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Food coloring
  • Alcohol
  • A variety of other solids and liquids that students may want to test

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Research and Planning: Each group of students should research mixtures, the difference between homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures, and what phases are.

  2. Creating the Mixtures: Groups should create several different mixtures using the materials provided. Mixtures can be liquid-liquid, solid-liquid, solid-solid, etc. It is a good idea for students to create mixtures that they think will be homogeneous and mixtures that they think will be heterogeneous.

  3. Observations and Recording: For each mixture, students should make detailed observations such as color, texture, smell, etc. They should also take pictures to document their observations.

  4. Identifying and Counting Phases: For each mixture, students should identify and count the number of phases that they can see.

  5. Making Connections to Theory: Based on their observations and results, students should try to connect the theory to the real-world by explaining why they counted the number of phases that they did for each mixture.

Project Deliverables

After conducting the hands-on activity, each group will create a report that includes:

  1. Introduction: Students should start by explaining what mixtures are, the difference between homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures, and what phases are. They should also state the purpose of the project.
