The universe is a vast and fascinating place, full of wonders that challenge our understanding. Nestled in this vast cosmic ocean is our home: the Solar System. Situated on the outskirts of one of the countless existing galaxies, the Milky Way, our Solar System is composed of a central star, the Sun, rocky and gas giant planets, and a myriad of smaller bodies. To understand our place in the universe, it is essential that we comprehend the structure and composition of the Solar System and the Milky Way.

Galaxies are large systems, composed of stars, gas, and dust, held together by gravity. The Milky Way is one of these galaxies, with characteristics that make it unique. However, even though it is our cosmic home, there are aspects of it that we still do not fully understand. Getting to know our galaxy better helps us understand the universe around us and how different elements interact with each other.

Living on a planet in the Solar System, in a galaxy like the Milky Way, offers us a unique lens to explore the universe. This project aims to present to you these key concepts of Science and Astronomy, proposing a fascinating journey through the known universe.

Studying galaxies and the Milky Way has profound implications for our understanding of the universe. By learning about the structure and composition of our galaxy, we gain insights into the formation and evolution of the universe as a whole. Furthermore, this understanding can have practical applications, such as in the search for extraterrestrial life or in space exploration.

Knowledge in astronomy also has significant philosophical and cultural implications. Historians believe that ancient civilizations used the movement of stars for navigation, while many cultures attributed spiritual or religious meanings to celestial bodies. Thus, studying galaxies and the Milky Way can help us better understand our own history and the cultural diversity of our planet.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Journey to the Galaxy: Exploring the Solar System and the Milky Way'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide students with a better understanding of the composition and structure of the Solar System, as well as the location of the Solar System in the Milky Way. It also aims to increase students' understanding of the nature of galaxies, including their characteristics and structures.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be tasked with investigating and presenting the following topics:

  1. The composition and structure of the Solar System.
  2. The location of the Solar System in the Milky Way.
  3. What galaxies are and their main characteristics.
  4. The Milky Way and its peculiarities.

To do this, they will conduct theoretical research and a practical activity that consists of creating two three-dimensional models, one of the Solar System and another of the Milky Way. The models must be realistic, interactive, and creative, reflecting the research conducted.

Required Materials

  • Various recyclable materials (PET bottles, corks, cardboard boxes, etc).
  • Colored paint.
  • Brushes.
  • Glue.
  • Scissors.
  • Colored paper.
  • String, straws, toothpicks, etc.
  • Computer for research.

Step by Step

  1. Divide students into groups of 3 to 5 members.
  2. Each group should conduct comprehensive research on the indicated topics. The sources used should be recorded for later citation.
  3. After completing the research, each group should start building the three-dimensional models.
  4. The models should be detailed enough, each component of the Solar System and the Milky Way should be represented proportionally and have its composition and function indicated.
  5. The teams will have at least 12 hours of work spread over one or two weeks to complete the project.
  6. After completing the practical part, each group will produce a report of their experience, including details of their research, application, results, and conclusions.

Project Delivery

Students must present the 3D models in an exhibition for the class and the school community. During the exhibition, they should be able to explain the composition and structure represented, as well as the characteristics of our galaxy.

In addition to the exhibition, each team must submit a written report containing the four main components discussed earlier:

  1. Introduction: Should contextualize the topics and explain their relevance and application in the real world, as well as the project's objective.
  2. Development: Should explain the theory behind the topics, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and present the results.
  3. Conclusion: Summarizes the main points, explains the learnings and conclusions about the project.
  4. Bibliography: List of books, websites, videos, etc., that were used as sources.

The report should be written clearly and cohesively, using appropriate vocabulary, correct punctuation, and logical structure. The integration of the researched concepts with the activity carried out is of utmost importance to demonstrate the effective grasp of the content and the ability to express it in an articulate manner.
