Context

When looking at the starry night sky, you have probably wondered what lies beyond what the eyes can see. The stars we see are part of a huge structure called a galaxy, a collection of billions of stars, gas, and dust. There are billions of galaxies in the universe, each with its own peculiarities. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is just one of these countless cosmic structures.

Galaxies are one of the largest structures in the universe, and their study helps us understand the universe on a much larger scale. By learning about them, we are learning about the universe and our place in it. Galaxies are a fascinating field of study that leads us to question and investigate the vastness of the universe.

Why Study Galaxies and the Milky Way?

Studying galaxies is fundamental to our understanding of the universe. Galaxies are home to all known stars, including our sun. Therefore, by studying galaxies, we are also studying the origin and evolution of stars and planets, like Earth, which host life as we know it. Furthermore, studying our galaxy, the Milky Way, can help us better understand the universe we live in.

The Milky Way is one of the billions of galaxies in the universe. It is a spiral galaxy with millions of stars, including our sun. Therefore, studying the Milky Way is a window to understanding the evolution and structure of galaxies, as well as offering a fascinating perspective on the vastness of the universe.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Navigating Through the Galaxies"

Project Objective

By creating a three-dimensional model of our galaxy, the Milky Way, and preparing a presentation about other galaxies, students will learn about the composition and structure of our galaxy, as well as about the existence of other galaxies in the universe. The activity will allow students to develop teamwork, research, report writing, and presentation skills.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group will be responsible for creating a physical model of the Milky Way using recyclable and easily accessible materials. Additionally, each group will conduct a detailed research on a specific galaxy other than the Milky Way, which will be presented to the class.

Required Materials

  1. Recyclable materials, such as shoeboxes, plastic bottles, cardboard, etc.
  2. Paints and markers of various colors.
  3. Scissors, glue, and tape.
  4. Kraft paper or cardboard for the research presentation.
  5. Internet access for research.

Activity Steps

  1. Research and Planning: Each group should start the project with research on the structure and composition of the Milky Way and a specific galaxy other than the Milky Way. This information will be the basis for building the model and preparing the presentation. At this stage, the group should also plan the creation of their model, sketching an initial design and listing the necessary materials.

  2. Model Construction: Using the available materials, each group will build a 3D model of the Milky Way, showing its main features such as its spiral arms.

  3. Presentation Preparation: Each group should prepare an oral presentation, approximately 10 minutes long, about the galaxy they researched. The presentation should include facts about the galaxy's structure, its peculiarities, and the location of our solar system in relation to it.

  4. Report Writing: In parallel with the development of the model and the presentation, students should work on the project report. The report should include the Introduction (contextualizing the theme and the project's objective), the Development (describing the theory studied, the activity performed, the methodology used, and the results obtained), the Conclusion (summarizing the most important points of the study and the learnings achieved), and the Bibliography used.

  5. Final Presentation: Each group will present their model and research to the class, explaining the details of the model and sharing the knowledge acquired about the chosen galaxy.

Students should deliver both the model and the oral and written presentation at the end of the project. The model will serve as a physical manifestation of their understanding of the Milky Way, while the presentation and report will demonstrate the knowledge acquired about the researched galaxy and the ability to articulate that knowledge clearly and in detail.
