The colors we see are the result of light being absorbed, transmitted, or reflected by objects. Sunlight, which we perceive as white, is actually composed of a mixture of various colors. This can be observed when light passes through a prism and is split into various colors forming a spectrum of colors, a phenomenon known as dispersion.

The main colors that make up light are red, green, and blue. They are called the primary colors of light because any other color can be obtained by combining these three. The combination of two primary colors results in a secondary color - red and blue form magenta, red and green form yellow, blue and green form cyan. The combination of the three primary colors results in white light.

Although it may seem simple, the way we perceive colors is a complex process that involves not only the physics of light but also the biology of our eyes and the mental process that interprets this information. Still, understanding the primary colors and their combinations is a fundamental step in understanding how we perceive the world around us.

The combination of these colors at different intensities allows the production of millions of other colors.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Primary Colors and Light

Activity Objective

The objective of this activity is to allow students to explore and understand the primary colors of light and how they can be combined to form other colors. Through a practical activity, students will have the opportunity to work in teams to plan and conduct experiments that demonstrate the primary colors.

Activity Description

In groups of 3 to 5, students will conduct an experiment using different colored flashlights to create a "color stage," where they can observe how reflected light and the color of the object result in the color we see. Additionally, they will learn how all light colors can be formed by combining the three primary colors.

Required Materials

  • Three small flashlights
  • Red, green, and blue cellophane sheets
  • Adhesive tape
  • A room or space that can be darkened
  • Objects of various colors

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Prepare the flashlights: Place a cellophane sheet of one of the primary colors on the lens of each flashlight and secure it with adhesive tape. This way you will have flashlights that emit red, green, and blue light.

  2. Choose a room or space that can be darkened so that the flashlights are the only source of light.

  3. Position the objects of various colors on the "stage" and illuminate them with one of the flashlights. Observe the color that appears and record it.

  4. Repeat step 3 with the other flashlights.

  5. Now, start experimenting with two flashlights at the same time, illuminating the same object. Record the colors that appear.

  6. Finally, illuminate the objects with all three flashlights at the same time. Record the colors you see.

Project Delivery

After conducting the experiment, each group should prepare a report containing:

  1. Introduction: Provide context on the theme, its relevance and real-world application, the objective of this project, and a brief description of the experiment conducted.

  2. Development: Explain the theory behind the experiment, explaining the concept of primary colors and how they combine to form other colors. Detail the methodology used in the experiment and present the results obtained, discussing them in light of the theory.

  3. Conclusion: Summarize the main points of the project, explain the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project. Comment on how the experiment helped understand the concept of primary colors and its practical application.

  4. Bibliography: Indicate the sources used to work on the project, such as books, websites, videos, etc.

This report must be submitted within a week after the experiment.

Students must demonstrate, through the activity and the report, that they were able to plan and conduct the experiment, interpret and discuss the results, work as a team, and manage their time effectively.
