Solar System: Introduction

Contextualization

The Solar System is a subject of great fascination that has enchanted people from ancient astronomers to contemporary scholars. It is composed of a star, the Sun, and all celestial bodies that orbit around it, including eight planets, dozens of moons, thousands of asteroids, and comets.

The eight planets can be divided into two main types: the rocky planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars) and the gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune). But the Solar System also includes a variety of other bodies, such as asteroids, comets, moons, and the Kuiper Belt.

Furthermore, it is important to mention that our Solar System is located in a galaxy called the Milky Way, which has approximately 100 billion stars. We are just a small part of this vast cosmos!

Now, why is it important to learn about the Solar System? Well, for starters, we live in it! Understanding the Solar System and its components allows us to better comprehend our own planet, Earth, and its interaction with other celestial bodies.

Moreover, the study of the Solar System is crucial for scientific and technological development. Through astronomy and astrophysics, we can develop new technologies, gain a better understanding of the universe, and even predict and protect our planet from potential threats, such as asteroid collisions.

  • The book "A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking, available in Portuguese, which provides an accessible overview of cosmology.
  • The NASA website (NASA Solar System Exploration), which offers a variety of detailed information, albeit in English.
  • The documentary series "Cosmos," presented by Neil deGrasse Tyson, available on Netflix, which discusses various concepts of astrophysics in a didactic manner.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Rebuilding the Solar System

Project Objective

This project aims to provide students with a deep understanding of the structure and composition of the solar system, as well as to deepen their knowledge about the location of our system in the Milky Way. This work will be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students and will last approximately two weeks.

Detailed Project Description

Each group will be tasked with creating a three-dimensional model of the Solar System, identifying the types of planets (rocky and gas giants) and their respective sizes and distances from the Sun. In addition, the planets should exhibit unique characteristics, such as rings, moons, colors, and rotation.

Additionally, the groups will have to prepare a presentation, in PowerPoint or similar software, describing each of the elements of the model, as well as the location of the Solar System in the Milky Way.

Required Materials

  1. Styrofoam or clay balls of different sizes and colors
  2. Wooden sticks
  3. Paints and brushes
  4. Glue
  5. Cardboard or wood for the base
  6. Computer with presentation software
  7. Research and study materials: books, websites, documentaries

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Research and Planning: Each group will conduct in-depth research on the Solar System and the Milky Way. They should understand the composition, size, distance between planets and the sun, as well as their unique characteristics.

  2. Creation of the Three-Dimensional Model: Using the mentioned materials, each group will build their own model of the Solar System. Students should be encouraged to be creative and realistic, based on the data collected during the research.

  3. Preparation of the Presentation: Alongside the construction of the model, the groups will work on preparing a presentation, explaining each of the elements of the Solar System, and describing the location of our system within the Milky Way.

  4. Project Presentation: Each group will present their version of the Solar System and deliver the prepared presentation to the other students and the teacher. They should explain each of the choices made during the construction of the model and the most relevant information about each of the components of the Solar System.

  5. Writing the Report: Finally, each group will have to write a report, following the sections of Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

In this document, they should contextualize the theme, explain the relevance of the Solar System and its location in the Milky Way. In the development section, students should detail the research and model creation process, as well as the preparation of the presentation. In the conclusion, the group should summarize the main points, the learnings acquired during the project, and the conclusions drawn. Finally, in the bibliography, they should list all the sources used for the project development.

These deliverables are intrinsically connected to the proposed activities, as they will address both the practical part (model and presentation) and the theoretical part (research and report writing). Additionally, the project also aims to develop socio-emotional skills, such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
