The seasons of the year are natural phenomena that deeply influence life on Earth. They are caused by the tilt of the Earth's axis in relation to the Sun and affect daily life in various ways - agricultural activities, ecosystems, and even the culture and behavior of people. Each season - spring, summer, autumn, and winter - has very different characteristics, and we experience them in distinct ways.

The seasons of the year are not geographically homogeneous. In the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere. Understanding the movement of the Earth and how it influences the climatic conditions around the globe is essential for us to comprehend the dynamics of our planet and how living beings have evolved to adapt to these changes.

In this project, we will explore the wonderful phenomenon of the seasons of the year. Through practical activities and group study, we will delve into the theory behind this fascinating subject, from understanding the Earth's rotation movement to explaining the alteration of climatic conditions in different regions of the globe.

Introduction

The movement of the Earth is mainly composed of two actions: rotation (which gives rise to day and night) and translation (which, together with the tilt of the Earth's axis, results in the different seasons of the year). The Earth does not revolve around the Sun on an axis perpendicular to the plane of its orbit. In reality, the Earth's axis of rotation is inclined at an angle of about 23.5º in relation to the plane of its orbit. It is this tilt that gives rise to the seasons of the year.

The seasons of the year are much more than just temperature differences; they also imply variations in the length of day and night, the arrangement of wind currents, the amount of rainfall, the behavior of animals, and the development of flora. All of this has significant implications for human life, shaping culture, economy, and daily activities.

Practical Activity: "The Four Faces of the Year"

Project Objective: Develop a deep understanding of the seasons of the year and their impacts through theoretical study and a practical modeling activity.

Detailed Project Description: The groups will investigate the seasons of the year through their own research and observation. The practical activity consists of creating a three-dimensional model of the Earth-Sun System that demonstrates the seasons of the year.

Materials Needed:

  • Styrofoam ball or a globe
  • Barbecue stick
  • Lamp (to represent the sun)
  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Paints and brushes

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Research and Observation Phase: Each group should start by researching the four seasons of the year and the characteristics associated with each of them, such as climatic differences, variations in day and night, and impacts on agriculture, culture, etc. The research should be documented for later use in the project report.

  2. Discussion Phase: After the research, the groups should discuss and review the concepts and information found, preparing for the next step.

  3. Modeling Phase: The groups should then start building the three-dimensional model of the Earth-Sun System. The Earth (represented by the styrofoam ball or globe) should be positioned on the barbecue stick at an angle of 23.5º to represent the tilt of the Earth's axis. The lamp will represent the Sun, and the cardboard will serve as the base for the model. The globe is rotated around the lamp, representing the Earth's translation movement and illustrating how the seasons of the year occur.

  4. Presentation Phase: Each group will present their model to the others, explaining how the seasons of the year occur and detailing the main characteristics of each season.

As a final delivery, each group must produce:

  1. Project Report: The report should follow the structure of Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography. In the Introduction, students should explain about the project and its importance. In the Development, they should detail the theory of the seasons of the year, the work methodology used, the activities carried out, and the results obtained. In the Conclusion, students should summarize the main points, indicating the learnings and conclusions about the project. Finally, the Bibliography should cite all sources used during the project.

  2. Three-Dimensional Model of the Earth-Sun System: This model will be presented as part of the practical activity evaluation, being a visual demonstration object for explaining the seasons of the year.

This project, estimated to be completed within a month, will allow students to acquire technical and socio-emotional skills as they explore the fascinating world of the seasons of the year.
