Human Body: Gametes and Transmission of Traits

Context

In this work, we will delve into the world of reproductive cells, also known as gametes, and understand how crucial they are in the transmission of hereditary traits. Gametes are specialized cells that contain half the number of chromosomes of a normal cell. In humans, this means that each gamete contains 23 chromosomes. Male gametes (sperm) and female gametes (eggs) combine during fertilization to produce a new cell with 46 chromosomes, which will develop into a new human being.

The transmission of hereditary traits is part of the foundation of genetics, the field of biology that studies genetic inheritance. It is through gametes that traits such as eye color, bone structure, predisposition to certain diseases, among others, are passed from parents to offspring. This transmission of traits is not limited to humans but is a general rule for all sexually reproducing organisms.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: The Incredible Race of Gametes

Project Objective

The objective of this practical activity is to allow students to experience in practice the process of transmission of hereditary traits and the formation of gametes. Through playful and collaborative activities, they will simulate the creation of gametes and the transmission of hereditary traits between different generations.

Detailed Project Description

Groups of 3 to 5 students will create a fictional species and draw its genetic characteristics. They will then reproduce these organisms through several generations, observing how traits are transmitted and how genetic diversity is maintained.

Required Materials

  1. A4 paper
  2. Pens, colored pencils, or markers
  3. Scissors
  4. Glue

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

  1. Students should divide into groups of 3 to 5 people.

  2. Each group will create a fictional species by drawing it on A4 paper. The drawing should include physical characteristics of the animal (e.g., color, size, number of legs, etc.).

  3. The drawn characteristics will be considered as determined by genes with two possible alleles. For each trait, students will define the two possible alleles (e.g., for color, it could be blue or red) and which one is dominant.

  4. Next, students should create two parents of the species, choosing for each parent the combination of alleles for each trait.

  5. The next step is to create the offspring of these parents. To do this, each group must simulate the formation of gametes and fertilization. They should do this for each trait of the species, generating a new organism with traits inherited from both parents.

  6. Steps 4 and 5 should be repeated for a defined number of generations (e.g., up to 5 generations), observing how traits are transmitted over time.

Final Report

After completing the practical activity, each group should produce a detailed report, divided into four parts: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

In the Introduction, students should describe the activity carried out, the relevance of the topic, and the project's objective.

In the Development section, they should explain the theory of gamete formation and the transmission of hereditary traits, describe in detail all the steps of the practical activity, and present the results obtained. Providing images and diagrams to help illustrate the results is a great idea.

The Conclusions section should present the main conclusions drawn from the results obtained, as well as the lessons learned during the project.

Finally, in the Bibliography section, they should indicate all the sources used during the project development, including books, web pages, videos, etc.
