Contextualization

Electromagnetic waves are a form of energy propagation that travels through space, carrying with them a combination of electric and magnetic fields that oscillate perpendicularly to each other, both perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave. These waves are categorized by the electromagnetic spectrum, which encompasses radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays.

These waves are fundamental to our daily life, being used in various ways and in different contexts. They comprise the light that allows us to see, the X-rays that allow us to see inside our bodies, radio waves, and microwaves that carry the information to our communication devices, among others.

In our increasingly connected world, it is crucial to understand how these waves work, as everything from GPS navigation to radio, TV, and internet transmissions depends on them. Therefore, knowing the basic concepts and properties of electromagnetic waves can help us better understand the technologies we use every day.

Hands-on Activity: "Tracking Electromagnetic Waves"

Activity Title: Identifying and Classifying Electromagnetic Waves in Our Daily Lives

Project Objective: The main goal is to acquire a practical understanding of electromagnetic waves, their presence in our daily lives, and the role they play. Through the hands-on activity, students will develop skills in identifying, classifying electromagnetic waves, and discussing their implications.

Detailed Project Description: Each group of 3 to 5 students will be responsible for identifying and classifying the electromagnetic waves present in different devices or technological systems that we use daily, such as remote controls, cell phones, microwaves, etc. Each group should choose three devices/equipment for analysis. The research and presentation of the results should be done creatively and may include presentations, videos, hands-on experiments, etc.

Materials Required: Computer with internet access, Notebook or paper for notes, Camera or cell phone for taking pictures or recording videos (optional).

Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Group formation: Students should organize themselves into groups of 3 to 5 members.

  2. Research and Planning: Each group should select three devices/equipment that use electromagnetic waves. After choosing, they should research and collect information about the electromagnetic waves used by these devices (type, frequency, source, application, etc.). It is also important to discuss the implications of using these waves, such as advantages and possible problems or risks.

  3. Record the Information: The information collected should be organized and recorded. Students can use photographs, create explanatory drawings, or even produce a video.

  4. Group Discussion: Hold a discussion with your group about the information collected and the implications of these electromagnetic waves in our lives.

  5. Report Production: The group should produce a report covering the introduction to the topic, development, and conclusions, as per the guidelines mentioned earlier. This report should be a reflection of the work done: the devices chosen, the information collected, the discussion carried out, and the implications of the electromagnetic waves observed.

  6. Activity Presentation: The groups should prepare a presentation (which can be slides, video, poster, etc.) to share their findings and discussions with the class.

The project has a total duration of one month, and it is estimated that each student will spend between 5 to 10 hours in total.

Project Deliverables:

Each group must deliver:

  1. Written Report: Each group must submit a written report following the structure: Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography. In the introduction, students should contextualize the topic of electromagnetic waves, the relevance of the topic, and the objectives of the project. In the development, they should detail the investigated devices and the information collected, explain the activity carried out, justify the methodology used, present and discuss the results obtained. In the conclusion, students should revisit the main points, summarize what they learned, and the conclusions reached. The bibliography should cite all sources of information consulted.

  2. Activity Presentation: A presentation (slides, video, poster, etc.) showing their findings and the discussion carried out. This presentation should be shared with the class.
