Theoretical Introduction

Textual coherence is a fundamental principle for the understanding and production of texts. It is the logical relationship between ideas that ensures meaning to the sequence of sentences and makes the text understood as a unit of meaning. Coherence is largely responsible for making the text understandable to the reader.

The coherence principle is based on four main topics: referential continuity (references must remain constant throughout the text), thematic progression (the theme must develop logically and fluently), thematic articulation (the text must be structured in a way that all parts contribute to the understanding of the whole), and non-contradiction (the information in the text should not contradict itself).

The practice of textual coherence involves key concepts from two disciplines: Portuguese and literature. In the Portuguese language, coherence is directly linked to syntax, mainly to aspects related to agreement and government, and to semantics, which deals with the meaning of words and statements. In literature, coherence is essential for the interpretation and analysis of a literary text.

Coherence is an essential tool for efficient communication in our society. It is crucial in both formal contexts, such as the work environment, and in more informal contexts, such as a conversation among friends. Without it, messages can become confusing, leading to misunderstandings and comprehension difficulties.

A practical example of the importance of textual coherence can be found in the journalistic field. An incoherent journalistic text will not reach the audience as expected, being incomprehensible or misinterpreted. Similarly, in the academic environment, coherence is fundamental for the production of research papers, monographs, dissertations, and theses.

Therefore, the study of textual coherence is crucial for our development as efficient communicators, capable of conveying our ideas clearly and accurately.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Coherence in Action: Building a School Newspaper"

Project Objective

This practical activity aims to integrate theoretical knowledge about textual coherence and the production of written texts. Students will apply the concept of coherence in writing articles for a school newspaper, which will be generated and distributed within the school and the local community.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants. Each group will be responsible for creating a section of the school newspaper, such as local news, editorials, sports, culture and entertainment, etc. Each student will be responsible for writing at least one article.

The project will last four weeks, during which students will work collaboratively to ensure coherence within each article and between the articles of each section. The conclusion of the project will result in the publication of a complete and coherent school newspaper.

• Paper for printing the newspaper copies

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

1. Week 1 - Planning: The first week will be dedicated to planning the newspaper. Groups will choose the newspaper section they want to work on and conduct research to identify the topics that will be addressed in each article.

2. Week 2 - Writing: In the second week, each student will write their article, taking into account the concepts of textual coherence. The articles will be reviewed by other group members to ensure the quality and coherence of the text.

3. Week 3 - Revision and Editing: In the third week, groups will revise and edit their articles, aiming to make the necessary adjustments to ensure coherence between the texts and the quality of the content. This stage also includes the layout of the newspaper.

4. Week 4 - Printing and Distribution: In the last week, groups will print and distribute the newspapers at the school and in the local community.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

1. Printed School Newspaper: This will be the main product of the project. Each newspaper must include an editorial section, where students will explain the process of creating the newspaper and the main challenges faced. The newspaper must be printed in a sufficient quantity for distribution at the school and in the local community.

2. Project Report: Each group must deliver a report detailing the project execution process. The report should include:

   • Introduction: Description of the project and its relevance.
   • Development: Detailed explanation of the newspaper creation process, including the strategies used to ensure textual coherence. The description of the methodology used and the results obtained.
   • Conclusion: Reflection on the newspaper creation process, the main challenges faced, and the lessons learned.
   • Bibliography: Bibliographical references of books, websites, videos, etc., used in the project.

The report must be written in a coherent and structured manner, following the standard norms of the Portuguese language. The report will be the key point to demonstrate the understanding and practical application of the concepts of textual coherence by the students.
