Reading and interpreting various textual genres is essential for understanding how the world communicates. Whether it's journalistic or literary texts, comics, or graphics, each genre has its own characteristics that need to be understood in order to read accurately and critically.

Textual genres are specific forms that humans have found to communicate. Each genre, whether oral or written, has its own structural and compositional characteristics. In addition, each genre has a specific communicative purpose, and this purpose defines the structure of the text. For example, a news article aims to inform readers about a fact, while a short story aims to entertain the reader.

Knowing how to interpret and produce these diverse textual genres is an essential skill for life in society and for the formation of citizens. Literacy is not limited to knowing how to decode letters, but rather to knowing how to make complex and critical readings of the various texts that circulate in our daily lives.

With the advent of social media and new forms of digital communication, the diversity of textual genres accessible to us has multiplied. Today, we deal not only with written texts but also with videos, podcasts, memes, gifs, among others. The interpretation and production of these new textual genres are challenges of our time.

In this sense, this project aims to work on the reading and interpretation of diverse textual genres, with the objective of developing students' critical skills and making them competent readers and producers of text.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Dissecting Textual Genres: An Analytical and Critical Study

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide students with the opportunity to explore, analyze, and interpret different textual genres, in order to recognize and understand their distinct characteristics and communicative purposes.

Students should also be able to identify the spread of fake news on social media and develop strategies to recognize it. In addition, they should produce an opinion article taking a position on a controversial topic with solid arguments.

Detailed Project Description

This project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students and should extend over a period of 3 to 4 weeks, with more than twelve hours of work per participant.

Students will be tasked with analyzing five different textual genres: news article, literary short story, poem, advertising text, and internet meme. Each group will select one example of each textual genre to analyze in detail, including structure, purpose, target audience, and language.

Special emphasis will be given to the analysis of news, where students should learn to identify fake news on social media and verify the veracity of a news story.

As a final part of the project, students will produce an opinion article on a controversial topic of their interest.

Step-by-Step Activity

1. Group Formation and Planning: Each group of students should be formed and the first task is to plan how the group will divide the responsibilities of the project among its members.

2. Text Selection: Students will research the internet and select one example of each textual genre for analysis.

3. Analysis of Textual Genres: Students will analyze each selected text, identifying its specific characteristics, purpose, target audience, language, etc.

4. Study of Fake News: Students will learn to identify fake news on social media and how to verify the veracity of a news story.

5. Production of the Opinion Article: Each group will choose a controversial topic and write an opinion article about it.

6. Proofreading and Finalization: Students will proofread their work and prepare their presentations for the class.

7. Project Presentation: Each group will present their work to the class.

The project deliverable will consist of a written report containing the analysis of the five textual genres, the study on fake news, and the opinion article produced.

The report should follow the format already described, containing an introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography. In the development, the theory on textual genres, the analyzed texts, the methodology for studying fake news, and the opinion article produced should be detailed. In the conclusion, students should reflect on what they learned throughout the project and the skills they developed.
