Cohesion Element

Contextualization

Portuguese is a rich and complex language that allows us to express an incredible variety of ideas and feelings. In this sense, it is essential that we understand its various mechanisms and tools to master the art of effective communication. One of these important mechanisms is the 'Cohesion Element'.

Cohesion elements are linguistic tools that link one part of the text to another, contributing to its fluency and coherence. They can be words, expressions, or even grammatical constructions that allow ideas to connect in a logical and structured way. Without them, our speeches and texts would be disconnected sequences of facts and ideas.

Textual cohesion is essential to ensure that our reader or listener follows our thoughts without getting lost. When well applied, it makes our texts more enjoyable and easy to read, as well as more convincing. It is, therefore, an extremely relevant skill not only in the academic field but also in everyday life and in various professions.

In the real world, the ability to write cohesive and coherent texts is highly valued. Whether in a work environment, where clear reports and emails need to be produced, in the academic world, with the writing of articles and dissertations, or even in our personal life, when we want to convey a point of view on social media or in chatting with friends. Mastering the elements of cohesion can, therefore, open doors to more effective and successful communication.

We suggest the following resources for further study and exploration of the topic:

  • 'Grammar of the Portuguese Language', by Maria Helena Mira Mateus: A complete guide on the Portuguese language, which includes a detailed chapter on textual cohesion.
  • Portal da Língua Portuguesa: An excellent source of resources and interactive activities for learning various aspects of the Portuguese language, including textual cohesion.
  • 'What is textual cohesion?' - Our Portuguese Youtube Channel: This video explains in a simple and clear way what textual cohesion is and how it works.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Treasure Hunt of Cohesion

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide students with a playful and cooperative way to explore and understand textual cohesion. Through the 'Treasure Hunt' activity, students will apply and practice the use of cohesion elements in practice.

Project Description

The student groups will be challenged to prepare a 'Treasure Hunt' game for other groups in the class. This game should be based on a coherent and cohesive narrative, told through clues. The clues must be written using different cohesion elements to link the parts of the game, making the story and clues interconnected.

Necessary Materials

  • Notebook and pen for notes and sketches
  • Computer with Internet access for research
  • Materials to create the clues (paper, pencils, colored pens, etc.)
  • Classroom or school space to hide the clues

Step by Step

  1. Divide students into groups of 3 to 5 people.
  2. Explain the concept and rules of the 'Treasure Hunt of Cohesion'.
  3. The groups will have to develop an original story that will be used as the basis for the game. This story must be coherent and cohesive, using different types of cohesion elements that were discussed in class.
  4. After defining the story, the groups must create a series of clues that guide the players through the plot. The clues must also use cohesion elements to link to each other and to the overall plot.
  5. Once the clues are ready, the groups must hide them in different locations in the classroom or school (with the teacher's approval, of course).
  6. Each group will then invite another group to play their 'Treasure Hunt' game, guiding them only if necessary.
  7. At the end of the practical activity, the groups must prepare a detailed report, discussing the concept of cohesion elements, how they were applied in the activity, the challenges faced, the results, and the conclusions.

Project Delivery

In addition to preparing and executing the 'Treasure Hunt of Cohesion', the groups must write a report, in the form of an opinion article, about the experience. The report should contain the following elements:

  • Introduction: Contextualization of the work, discussion on the relevance of cohesion elements, and explanation of the project's objective.
  • Development: Detailed discussion on cohesion elements, explanation of the activity in detail, methodology used by students to create the 'Treasure Hunt of Cohesion', and presentation of the results (how other groups performed, which clues were easier or more difficult, etc.).
  • Conclusion: Reflection on the work done, lessons learned, and conclusions drawn about the application of cohesion elements in practice.
  • Bibliography: Sources used by students to carry out the project.

Remember, the main objective of the project is to learn about cohesion elements and how they are applied in practice. The report should reflect this learning and demonstrate the students' understanding of the topic through the practical experience of the 'Treasure Hunt of Cohesion'.
