What Are Animals?

Animals are living things, just like you and me! They need to eat food to get energy, and they can move around. A little bird flies to find worms, eats them, and grows bigger every day.

Two Big Animal Groups

Five Vertebrate Families

Vertebrates are animals with a backbone. There are five main types of vertebrates: Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds, and Mammals. Think of a goldfish as a fish or a frog as an amphibian!

Fish: Underwater Friends

Fish are vertebrates that live in water, using their strong fins and tails to swim. They breathe underwater with special parts called gills, which are different from our lungs! You might see a colorful goldfish or a speedy shark, both are fish.

Amphibians: Land &amp; Water
